Ridiculous as it may seem!!

Is that covered by warranty?

Hi all,
Sorry to bring this up again, but the ol man is about to buy (tommorrow)a Subaru Impreza 22B MY98 R plate Jap import. Is £29995 a reasonable price for one of these considering it has covered just 6000 miles with one uk owner, has had the clutch changed to a more managable item, the speedo converted to mph and the 112mph speed limit removed.
Responces to this topic greatly appreciated as soon as possible!
Also, are they hard to sell? (If he does'nt like it!!) What might it's value be in 6 months say?
Thanks
David

sounds like a great price to me.
Wouldn't expect teh va;ue to change much at all in six months.
Why is he buying a car he might not like?
If he isnt a hardcore die hard fan, I would rather have a P1 for that money. (but it would lose more).

Hi David,
Not that my opinion's gospel, but I think that is a bit pricey (even taking into account the new-ness of the motor)....
I'll put my flamesuit on and sya £27K....
I've seen UK 22Bs going for £36K...... can't remember the spec.
Also bear in mind the Jap 22B won't be covered by the Subaru warrantee (in my experience, essential when spending that kind of dough on a car!!)
I can't say about the value, but bear in mind that the imports are proving a barsteward to insure - especially the Sti/22b... This would also be a deciding factor for somebody buying the car.
Also as it's a Jap, you won't be able to p/ex it at a dealer!!!
Be wary.....
Just my 2p......
Dan

Dan,
you think the warranty is worth 8k?
short of a complete engine rebuild, what is going to cost 8k?
clutch replacement (done already) is the only thing that in normal use is expensive at under 1K.
Most japs go for 30 to 34 (rarely) now. I think 28 is way too low for what sounds liek a good one.
And before anyone says I am trying to bolster the value of mine, I have said it before I dont care how much mine is worth, cos I am never selling it!

What warranty? It's a MY98 on an R plate so, at best, it'd be registered on 31st July 98 at the latest, so there'd be only 13 days (and counting) left on a Subaru warranty.
Any (OK, most) dealers would take a Jap-spec 22B as a trade-in; they just wouldn't be able to put it on the forecourt. But they could trade it, swap it, flog it direct or just keep it for the Sales Manager
The 22B is still a bit special and not many people have the opportunity to buy one. Even if you only keep it for a short time (and assuming it's still in one piece after that ), you're never going to lose much money on it, if any. I'd go for it.

bennetm,
The original question was should this guy buy a 22B (JAP IMPORT). This car never was covered by a warranty (an official Subaru one anyway)
My answer was to Adams statement that short of a complete engine rebuild what could possibly cost c.£8k. Clearly with an import the cost of ownership is FAR higher.
This guy needs to be aware of the ‘potential costs’. An official U.K. spec car would be an awful lot cheaper to repair and run day to day (warranty or no warranty). Prang a Jap spec car and even if you have a wallet stuffed full of wonga, its going to hurt! The same damage to a U.K. 22B would be half the price and a fraction of the time to carry out. The warranty is worth having.
His decision.

Those of us that are sensible took the warranty extension to 5 years on the UK cars and that then begs the question of price differential against rarity/warranty/availability of parts and manufacturer support this could indeed equal £8K, however I think 28K is low and a £30K price tag is more appropriate.
This however could be stated as how long is a piece of string, as cars are only worth what people are prepared to pay for them!(market forces!)

Thank you Paul - this is what I was trying to get at.
And to everybody else, no I don't own a 22B. Yes I would LOVE a go in one, let alone to own one.
Jap cars may be a better option, but not from the 'hidden extras' aspect......
Again, just my 2p....

Edited to mention to David "Sorry the ole man decided against it - tell him not to give up. ALL Imprezas are a little bit special - hence this bbs"
