I think I got flashed the other day (35 in 30 zone)Anyway the camera looked like a Gatso but was facing the other way ie towards the traffic What was it? It wasn't one of those Truevo things (or what ever they are called) as I've seen them before.
Oh and in daylight how noticable is the flash? Would you really know you have been got? Just praying it was sunlight reflecting off the lense

Flashes from Gatso's are VERY noticable, day or night, there will always be 2. Not sure if the Truvelo system flashes, never seen one go off before.

If it flashed towards you, then chances are it was a Gatso flashing some hapless so & so on the opposite side of the road. If you so the flashes in your rear-view mirror - then it could be you.

I do not believe that Truvelo flashes as they are on your side of the road or in central res. They do nor dare risk dazzle/startle people, thereby possibly causing them to crash & be injured/die/outrage/sue etc. This is the same reason that you do not find Gatsos in tunnels, rather at the beginning or end.

I may be wrong, but that is what I understand.

Gatsos can be set off by oncoming traffic, as every good courier knows...

Question

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it might be a dummy camera, we have plenty around here (A52 near Alton Towers) and they constantly flash me from the opposite side of the road, the second flash usually happens after i've passed it, so there's no way it's taking a shot of my car, but could possibly be a deterrent. Either that or they're just set up very badly! Info from any former plod would be nice!

35 in a 30 zone - you'd be unlucky to be prosecuted. Maybe they're stricter in 30 zones but I'd always thought that most Gatso's don't even trigger until you're about 10 mph over the limit.

If the gatso triggers as you travel towards it,then you have nothing to fear. It is simply a box with NO actual camera in it.It does still register speed as the radar is permenantly live.Above is for common gatso.

If it does not flash as you speed towards it then it is live with a camera inside ..Beware.

Hi,
Last year on my way back through a small village near Bridport in Dorset at 2am in the morning I was flashed by a camera facing me ( I knew the camera was there ). Even though I was sure I wasn't going to get a ticket, I was relieved after a few weeks had passed and no brown envelope had dropped through the door.
Could this have been because the road was narrow and the markings were on the road ?

Steve.

Just got "double flashed" by a Gatso doing around 52 in a 40 zone on the A40 out of London near Ealing.

If it is a live one, anyone know how many points and how many readies this will cost?
First ever speeding 'offence' in the UK. Do I need to tell my insurance co., or are they only interested at renewal time?

Suresh

P.S. Just got a mail suggesting several extremely rude Valentines messages for a card. I lol'd big time. Not suitable to post here , so mail me or leave a msg. here if you fancy a chuckle.

police don't normally prosecute until 10% + 3mph in a 30, hence 36 mph. most gatso's are set around the 40 mph mark in a 30 zone!

Dont worry about it just yet. I got double flashed by two cameras on the North Circular near Neasden over a year ago and never got anything through (hopefully the guy in the other lane next to me did!). I was also double flashed on the Purley Way a few weeks back with no follow up package! and also on the Brighton Road in Croydon about 6 months back!

They need to send you a NIP within 14 days otherwise its not a valid prosecution.

If you do get 3 points and a fine, you can always contest it anyhow.

If you do take the hit then just tell your insurance company straight away. In my experience they have never loaded a premium for an SP30 or similar (even though it was doing a 62 in a 30 with 6 points - making 9 points from 2 SP30s on my licence!)

You can not be prosecuted on a gatso for less than 11MPH over the limit.

If you get a ticket for 51 in a 40, contest it as you will be on the border and they will have put that there for legal reasons.

I contested a 51 in a 40 last year after my mate who used to be a special copper told me of this. They dropped the charges.

Question

John

How exactly did you contest it?...i.e. what did you write/not write?

Regards

John ..you suprise me. the leagal limit is 10% + 2 mph NOT 10% + 3 as was posted earlier. There are moves a foot to increase this but they are not in yet. 35 mph in a 30 and you could be nicked, Gatso or not. Sunil is right, 14 days to get the Notice of Intended Prosecution from date of photo. If you dont get one you are in the clear.

Kris of course you are correct that i was over the limit, but aparantly the acuracy of the photographic evidence is not good enough to prosecute you for less than 11MPH over the limit.

I wrote on my reply to the charges that i was not doing 51MPH.
I was in fact doing about 60 when i spotted the lines on the road and started braking so on the first flash i was doing at least 55.

I did not say i was not speeding, i just said i was not doing 51MPH, so was not lying to the court, should it have come to that.

Like i say, i went on the advise of a friend who knows the law on the use of gatso's and he was proved to be correct, i still have a clean license.

Going back to the original gatso questions.
You CAN be done from a front facing Gatso, After reading an article in one of the bike mags recently, they showed two types of stationary gatso camera.

One with the big round 'usual' lens, and another with a small square below the round lens.

The one with the square is for front facing radar to catch oncoming traffic as well as traffic from behind.

Its fun on the bike to wave at the Gatso's as you go along but i wouldnt advise it in a car.

The bike mag was refering to the infra red ( truvelo) type front facing camera. The original question was if it flashes. Well the infra red ones dont flash ( not that you would see anyway unless you are a bat or something!)

John .. whos a lucky boy then ?

we ALL could be lucky boys if we contest these things, if you get a note through the post with exactly 11MPH over the limit contest it, works for me.

I've checked the speedtraps site (thanks Huxley) and found it was a Truvelo camera. So the flash I saw must have been sunlight Pheeeww

Thanks again all
