I'm with admiral. I have an STI V 4dr with a scoobysport back box and magnex centre section. I originally went for the downpipe too but sent it back as it was too noisy for me. I just told admiral that I wanted to put on an aftermarket exhaust and that it gave a negligible performance increase (mainly noise) the girl on the other end said 'oh yes I've heard them, they do sound cool'. They charged me £30 and it is listed as something like aftermarket exhaust manifold and system on the policy. I'd ring them again and hope to talk to someone different. Then again insurance companies do seem to change with the breeze. When renwewing I tried greenlight and was told they wouldn't touch anyone under 30 on an STI.

would u so good as to mail me off-line with ur policy details, so that i may refer them to see if they would approve it.

they said with the PPP that if i had someones policy number, they would approve the modification.

When I had a Cav GSI, I phoned my old insurance company to ask if I could put in an K&N Panel filter. They said NO! I did explain that it wasn't going to give huge HP but still they said no.

I was insured with Admiral when I had an S2. I can't remember whether they wouldn't insure me or if the premium was too high. I ended up with Bell direct. full ncb protected 30yrs £1040. I decatted the exhaust and told them I was fitting a performance exhaust. They asked very little and said it was not an issue and the premium would increase by £60/70.

I was careful to give them the facts but not go into to much detail, whether they will honour a claim if anything goes wrong is another issue!!! I'll just have to keep the centre available just in case!!!!!

good luck!

Cool

I was with Admiral and they wanted 1600 quid before I had done any mods

Now with Privilege who allow up to 10% bhp increase at no cost.

I've got de-cat centre and back plus some driving lights, all at no extra charge.

If Rum can't do you a good deal, give them a call and see what you can get, or do it anyway (no offence Rum )

Appologies to Moderators if this is offensive, but I feel its important for people to know.

Currently I have a Swona Back Box, PIAA driving lights ans QuickShift.

I phoned with enquiring to find out what impact it would have to get a Decatted Centre section and perhaps a Decatted Downpipe.

I expected to be able to get the centre section, but thought they might disapprove of the DP.

Phoned up, took my details, told them i was considering decatted (no cat) CS.

General jist of conversation, cant remember every word:

A:'A performance exhaust sir?'

ME:'No, just the centre section, with no cat - less restrictions.'

ME:'And depending on impact, a DP too.'

A:'One minute sir, ill check that we can accept the modifications to the car'

few seconds later.

A:'Why are you wanting to change the exhaust?'

ME:'For sound really.'

A:'To make it louder? Ok sir.'

minute later...

A:'We are unable to accept the modifications to the car.'

ME:'Why?'

A:'The performance increase would be too much.'

ME:'Even with just the centre section? Its only about 2 - 4 bhp.'

A:'Yes, with the modifications you currently have, it would make the performance too great. You have different lights?'

ME:'Yes, PIAA driving lights.'

A:'And you have modified the transmission?'

ME:'Yes, just a Quick Shift - makes the gear leaver not move as far. Feels liks a tighter gear change.'

A:'Tell me more about it.'

ME:'Technically, its a different bar that connects the gear leaver to the gearbox'

A:'I see, like a smaller box.'

ME:'Smaller box? Umm, no, just makes the gear stick movement shorter.'

A:'Well, as I said sir, im afraid we cannot insure the car with the modifications.'

Boodbyes and end of conversation.

Its only a flaming Centre Section!!!!

Not like a superchip, and my car is only lightly modified.

1 month to go and change of insurer.

Funny when i look back - asked about insuring a PPP on the car, which they refused.... they wont even insure a Centre Section, how would they insure a PPP!!

Note: its not me, its the car.

27, 2 years NC, driveway, clean licence and no claims.
!!!!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I've just cancelled with Admiral, was sick of policy going up year after year, it probably does with everyone

I've rang absolutely loads, got the cheapest from elephant.co.uk

I've decided to go with Norwich Union at £629. Weren't bothered about the Magnex rear box, Spoiler or 17' and wife under 30.

Try Tescos - Honestly, they cover all sorts of mods, import vehicles, and are very competitive!

Just check their website...

ATTENTION! PLEASE READ ON!

I have been insured with Admiral for the last few years and paid £1550 or so for my MY 98 WRX last year (27, 3 yrs no claims) which believe it or not was quite competitive. During this time they also charged me an extra £30 for a pipercross air filter fitted half way through this period which I thought was a bit steep. Anyway, I recently had my renweal for this year from them and now being 28 with an extra years claim free driving (4 yrs ncb) I hoped my insurance would at least stay the same if not fall, but no! They decided to quote me £1850!!! Until now they had been cheaper than most other places I'd phoned so I was a bit concerned to say the least about prospects elsewhere. However, I gave those nice chaps at Keith Michaels a ring among EVERYONE else I'd seen mentioned on this board and they gave me easily the best quote at £1250, under cutting Admiral by a whopping £600!!! They also said they didn't increase for 'minor'mods (just make sure they know) unless it was a catless down pipe or something else sigificant like that - ie no increase for a Scoobysport back box (or air filter!)for example as the power increase was quite small for such items.
The moral - don't despair and phone around as you will find significantly better quotes with more flexibile policies elsewhere.

Another vote for Privilege (aka Direct Line).

I was previously with Admiral but found Privilege to be cheaper this year.

I pay £685 fully comp for a MY00 with Scoobysport decat centre, Magnex backbox, K&N panel filter & 17" wheels. I've also got 5 points for speeding.

ScoSaltire, I'm 27 too and as we're in a similar area hopefully you'll get a similar quote.

Chris

Hanslow you are a lucky boy.I am with Privilege and have been charged an extra £40 for fitting a downpipe.Although in their defence they are by far the cheapest quote I can find.
Cheers Paul.

Try Frizzel's, they are a broker, but they were very competertive for my quote. You have to be over 25, not sure what they are like on the Mod's front. But I paid £400ish when others were quoting me £1600.

If you try Tesco tell them that you regually carry children in the car as this seams to qualify for a discount. Just make sure it is clear that it is yours or your friends children not the ones you go round randomly picking up.

Paul,

Wouldn't say I was that lucky. I'm in a similar situation to ChrisG, yet I'm still paying just under a grand...where does the extra 300 quid go

I'm trying Tescos come renewal time
