Talking

Can anyone help, we have a big head here who has a Lotus 340R.

He has just been to the Nurburgring, he has said the following, we at work dont belive him.

It took about 7 hours to drive from Calis
He was doing 9:33 Laps
The cost of running is per lap
He saw a coach on 1 lap
He saw a BMW M5 called the Ring Taxi

Does anyone know if any of the about could be true ??

What is a good lap time for a standard Scooby ??

Cheers

There are buses that take people round the ring - I don't know how often.

There is a BMW Ring Taxi (could be an M5)

Your other questions I can't answer, I'm sure others will though.

Yup, all true I think.

Any sort of vehicle is allowed on the ring since its a public road (there may be restrictions for artics, tractors etc) but you do see coaches, mini buses, cars with bikes on a roofrack, cars, bikes....

The ring taxi's are white M5's and very fast.

9.33 lap time is probably about right, slow for some but faster than me!!!

It costs approx £6 per lap I think

Seems he tells no lies!

Barge, you could save face in knowing that Sport Auto drove the MY00 round in 8:37 seconds (bog standard car) for the full lap.

Barge,

All true I'm afraid. Take comfort from the fact that my 330 diesel Beemer was quicker than his 340R though!

Matt, with all due respect ... 4 hours from Calais to Ring requires drivers licence swallowing speeds.

At 100 mph, it takes me 2 hours from Calais to my home, and about 2,5 hours to the Ring.

Throw in a few detours, and a fun drive, and 6 hours is about right.

OK, he did 7 so he was really slow or went the Meltstead route

Surely 295 miles in 4 hours is less than 75mph average. I know the last 30 or so are not motorway but I dont think a 75 average is license threatening.

bloody hell john! that's a mighty fine run!

recall that getting to Munster (germany) from calais took about 3 - 4 hours, and some of that might have been at terminal velocity, then again, maybe not if you know what I mean!

Matt,

That stuff for cleaning your wheels is called Belgum Alu. It's meant to be for keeping metal shining, but works well on baked on brake dust, as you know. I think that it protects the wheels too. Use it gently though, because it's not really designed for alloys. You can get it from bike shops or order it from M&P.

Theo,

4 hours is no problem! There's no need to stop for fuel in the Beemer, and you can cruise at 100 plus. Alledgedly

Question

If it's a public road, does that mean that any vehicle can go on it? Is it not closed at weekends, or something so that people can race on it? If it is not closed then is it not dangerous to have people racing on it and some family in an old estate? Also, I assume you have to pay, but if it is a public road can you not go on for free?

Sorry about all the questions but I haven't got a Scooby Doo

Cheers,
Tom

It is only about 260 from Calais. Head from Calais on the E40 towards Ostend and keep going past Brussels towards Liege .Once past Liege come off the motorway and head for Eupen and Monschau . Join the 258 to Blankenheim and stay on this road until you hit the Ring. From Calais in Mercedes Vito van with a race car on a trailer it can be done in less than 5 hours. I know because I do it about twice a year.

Tom,

Yes it is closed for races etc but when Scoobynet et al say they are using it it is just a normal open weekend so any road legal vehicle can use it. It is not free but a toll road as you are taking a scenic drive in the Eifel mountains. Ahem

Tom,

If you want to come along to the next one check the international forum. There will probably be a space in my car if you can't bring your own.

My journey included 3 stops for fuel. LOL
That needle dont half drop fast when tanking on in a westie.

It's great driving late at night, there is bugger all on the road except mad BMW drivers.

It took me 7 hours to get from manchester to dover. Our roads are toss compaired to continental europe. I didnt see a single road works all journey on the continent either. Lost count of how many i went through in the UK. Why the hell is that? We seem to be for ever repairing the roads over here.

Cheers for the replies, now I understand. Must be a good driver to go round and avoid joe public?

Matt,

You serious? I'd loved to go to the 'ring, after hearing so much about it on Scoobynet and other places. Unfortunately I have no car... I'm learning to drive

How much does a weekend cost, on average (exc. beer )?

Cheers,
Tom
