I have just recently imported a 1995 WRX Jap import the car meets every expectation and more, I have read various articles about the different octane rating of fuel from 100ron in Japan to approx 97ron for super unleaded in the uk, I currently run super with Silkolene power boost which should bring it up to about 100ron but according to Subaru UK dealers they state the engine will burn itself out in a few thousand miles, Is this so.

momo,

As long as you run super UL you should be OK. If you intend pushing hard or doing a trackday then Octane booster is a must.

If you want to be extra safe get it on a rolling road to make sure its not detting on the lower octane fuel or consider having a knocklink fitted. This device gives you an on dash display of any detting problems.

Lots of people on this bbs run imports with no problems, don't worry enjoy your scoob.

We've had our 94WRX for 2 years now, and had no problems with the petrol (SUL)Agree with logiclee about using octane booster when doing track days or going on a hard run, but I wouldn't think you should have to put it in everytime you fill up though. As for the no.2 piston melting, I always thought that was to do with the oil temp and not the fuel grading, pretty sure Banzai did a write up on the problem a few months ago, but I could be wrong. Anyway, hope you enjoy the car as much as we do

Red face

momo,

I consider myself a bit of an expert on this as my first import a 93 RA broke no 2 piston due to extreme detting (pinking).

I picked up the car in Ireland, and as it was a long trip home without a radio, I wore head phones for most of the trip back to Plymouth, so I could not hear it pink, piston slap started after about 300 mile so the engine had to be ditched, bought a replacement for £1000 inc vat and fitted it myself (Thats a very long story!)

My brother runs a tunning company, when the new engine was installed he soon noticed the ECU had been chipped which caused the extreme detting on 95 RON. My current car 95 wrx runs ok on 95 ron, but slight detting can be heard under at full load at about 0.9 bar 5,000 revs, so I would agree with the others for track use always use an additive. But for normal use I would get a good tunning company with import experience to check it out and stick to 97 RON. I get away with 95 RON but my brother taught me how to listen for detting, and now I know the circumstances I manage to avoid it.

OOPS, forgot to mention Subaru dealers are crap and should be avoided at all cost.

International motors (SUBARU UK) - HATE THEM.

I run my 93 WRX on 97 RON with no probs to power - (except that it is just having new pistons due to no4 having a broken ring, but not cos of the fuel rating).
If you're stuck for SUL (super unleaded) then keep a bottle of booster in the boot for the times you can only get 95 RON and use the booster to mix and give 97 RON

Good luck,
Matthew

Likewise, I have a 93 wrx with no problems. I use SUL whenever I can and octane booster every other fill up but it has been run ok on NUL up in Scotland with no pinking
