Was talking to someone today in passing - along the lines of

Me - 'Nice car mate'

He had an Impreza Sport (no scoop), so I thought it was a good things to say seen as I have an Impreza too.

Him - 'Thanks, fastest thing, ... yadda yadda yadda'

This raised my suspicions, so I continued

Me - 'What is it?'

Him - 'Subaru Impreza Turbo'

I ended the conversation and left then, thinking what a tit he was.

Anyone else met people trying to pass their car off for something it isn't.

Regards
James

At Oulton Park, two years ago, there was a silver Impreza that had the full STi body work, stickers... you name it.

The simple give away was the "big" speedo in the dash and no climate control.

For the money the guy spent, I'm sure he could have swapped and bought an STi.

Theres a guy in Clevedon who drives a red late shape supra. Nice car, obviously not a twin-turbo though.

A friend and myself have spoken to him (independently) and he claims it is an ex racecar that has been chipped giving 480BHP!

Funny how, when he decided to tailgate me on a fictional motorway that may or may not exist, occifer, he just dissappeared behind when I decided to open the gap up, purely for safety reasons, you understand. TT Supras should have the advantage on long straight bits of road! He saw me later the same day and asked if that had been me. I was non-comittal, but he seemed highly impressed at how a mere cheapo saloon could outpace his "480bhp racecar".

Always prefered the idea of a Wolf-in-sheeps-clothing myself. I like the idea of the M3 badged as a lesser car!

Not to defend BS'ers, but how would you be able to tell by looking if it's a TT. There are no visual clues. If it doesn't have a bonnet scoop, that just means it isn't a UK spec.

There's a guy who works with one of my mates who has a GSi Carlton that he tells everyone is a Lotus Carlton and before that he had an XR4i engined Sierra Coupe that he told everyone was an RS500... When asked to have a look under the bonnet, he always used to decline. Obviously thought we couldn't tell the difference between a V6 and a in-line turbo four....

Just re-read your message. Doh! Best idea I ever heard was to put a Chevy lump into the back of a Mini van. Hehe.

Beef,

Firstly, I counted the turbos and ended up with a total of zero. Doesn't sound like a turbo when driving around either, not even the feintest whisper of a spinning turbo.
I couldn't see any sign of an intercooler up front, whereas my mate's 93.5 aero tt seems to have one in the nose section.

Secondly, how come you are a "scooby regular" when you've only posted 16 times in the past?

Jasper Carrot once commented on Vauxhall's lack of judgement in releasing the Lotus Carlton. "Christ", he said, "don't they realise that in seven years time they will all be owned by Taxi drivers!". Nice one.

Discretion could be the name of the game here.

I drive a white Wagon Turbo, totally debadged. No one bothers me, in fact many Scooby drivers think I'm in a sport with a scoop.

Boy racers don't bother to challenge and vandals/thieves etc just miss it.

I also have a 1969 V8 Series Land Rover. No this one really looks like the kind of thing you don't want to be stuck behind. Had some fun with some boy racers in their 80's Fiestas on a dual carriageway in Surrey. Their faces, as I joined their dual...........until 60mph,when handling is well.....lacking.

Don't you think it's a bit sad though - particularly as he could see what you were driving and you'd know the difference? Maybe some of it is deliberate but some of it may be just plan 'really don't have a clue and have taken someone's word for it' - sad really I feel sorry for the poor chap.
P

But the best thing was a few months ago at the sports centre when a young lad announced over the tannoy

'Would the owner the Ford Celica registered XYX 123 please return to their car they've left their parking lights on' ... doooohhhhh!

Penni - I wasn't in my car at the time so he had no idea.

Plus, I was with some girlies so may be it was an spontaneous attempt at impressing them (ie, mouth in motion before engaging brain). Hopefully, he realised how stupid he sounded. If he's reading this board - he does now.

Phil - I'm not dissing the sport. Hell, I've driven some ****e cars and the sport is not on that list.

Biggest prat I've ever seen was at a BMW club meeting. He had an E36 318i completely done up - costing thousands of pounds to look like an M3 Evo. It of course had nothing done to the engine suspension etc. Only one thing apart from the engine - was different... drum brakes on the back!

i used to have fun driving my Hillman Imp rally car on the road to a rally back in 1989.

Used to get all the boy racers trying it on in there XR3i's etc.

Should have seen there faces when i would clear off and leave them for dead. 115BHP and 10,500RPM, high first close ratio dog box etc in a shoebox was well quick to 100. Used to do 50MPH in first.

Used to be fun passing MK2 Escorts round the outside at 60 on a tarmac stage aswell, the grip was well impresive.

My saphire cossie i just sold looked bog standard on the outside but had 350BHP under the bonnet, now that was a quick car that looked nothing special.

I use to find it amazing the number of people who thought the MR2 was built by Mazda .

The worst I've come across is the 1.8L sierra sapphire, dressed up as a cossie.

It's not like there is any big body mods, but they just can not get it right!

See Ya!

Ok, how about the debadged BMW 316 with 18" wheels and the standard tiny brakes on display for everyone?

Dressing up a 1.8 Sierra as a Cossie would probably just attract teenage joyriders...

I'd love to see the look on their faces after having waited for the right moment to knick it, putting their foot down and nothing much happening

hee hee

I didn't realise you'd have seen under the bonnet.

Anyway, you only need 10 posts to become a regular, and I quite like your BBS, so if too many people don't object, I'm going to hang around and annoy everyone.

My mondy ST24 is not debadged (yet!) but it is a) a saloon, and, b) does not have the rather dodgy RSA body kit! So I like the Q car thing. When (if?) I get a scoob, it will probably have to be a wagon, as I don't think that my Wiemarner (when I get one) would appreciate sitting in the boot or the front passenger footwell!, also I think that the wagon would stop boy/girl racers hassling me. Also my partner can go and do her girl racer bit and annoy Merc/BMW/Vectra/Mondeo (delete as applicable) drivers.

I saw a Fiesta the other day with 17" gold wheels - didn't look that bad.

My wheels - with any luck - I will wear out the tires at SantaPod as I hate 'em Bridgestones all over the place. If I do then I'll get the wheels done and new tires at the same time.

Spencer sent me a picture of his wheels and I rather favour them - albeit they are gold and at the end of the day probably the best colour to match the horrible orange flashing in my seats - which I hate hate hate.

So yes 'they all 'ave 'em Gold ... Luv..!

There's an RS2000 Escort here in Northampton that is visually identical to an Escort Cossie, interior included.
You should hear it when it goes past though... .....buzzes like a....one of them buzzing things, you know!
