Question

I'm getting my new car shortly and have started to wonder what fuel I should use (yes I know Petrol) I'm thinking more about which supplier:
has anyone had good results from a certain fuel co with regard to extra mpg or bhp?.
I am of course talking about standard 95 ron unleaded.

I stick to the quality brands. BP, Shell, Esso.

I have a MY00 and run it on normal unleaded (95RON) always from a 'name' garage. Runs fine, dealer says it makes little difference unless you are driving flat out all the time when it maybe possible to tell you have a slightly higher power output

I ran nothing but SUL (98 RON then)in my last scoob (MY 95 turbo) for the first year or so until the price became ridiculous. I then changed to UL 95 RON and didn't notice too much difference - although the top end of the rev range was possibly harsher.

Personally I don't think the minimal performance gains justify the price premium.

Regarding supermarket fuel, is it not identical (except perhaps detergent additives) to big brands? I heard somewhere that regardless of vendor, it comes from the same refineries.

D.

Question

I'm not being sarcastic this is a genuine question, but does it really make a difference where the fuel comes from?

All fuel in your area (wherever you are) will come from the nearest refinery (keeps the transport costs to a minimum). The difference between brands is added at the tanker. The main brands all compete against each other to provide different benefits ("cleaner" fuel, better mileage, etc) but most of it is to give them a marketing edge. The "unbranded" stuff (supermarkets, etc) sell it neat to keep the costs down.

the best tip i can give you on fuel is use a station that has a high turnover.
Staions that shift small quantities end up with more water in the fuel as it has longer to condense in the underground tanks.

I always use branded fuel as they seem the same price these days. On a standard car i would be quite happy to use 95RON, on a modded car or Sti i would use super97RON plus 1% octain booster.

I have never used anything other then SUL either ESSO or Shell in my 98MY UK. I only do 5,000 a year so the extra is not that much. They are suppose to run quite happily on 95 but I was advised by my supplying dealer that 98 (then) was better .

cheers

Thumbs up

Hi all
My main reason for starting this thread was to see what people said about supermarket fuel, as it is (in this area) one of the cheapest around.
Thanks for all of the replies.

Hey John,
Is n't SUL 98RON = 97Octane ?
Howie

Ron, I stick to BP or Esso. Ran our modified VW's on Esso - no problems, Supermarket stuff - pinged like hell, especially the G60 Corrado.

I once heard a rumour not sure of the source but Petrol Tankers onced they had filled the forecourts specific tanks, they dumped the rest of the fuel in whatever tank had room!! even diesel. So unless you're a lab technician by trade, and can test a sample, who knows what we're really buying - at vastly over inflated prices - grumble , grumble, ... when is the chatserver coming back online????

Even though the fuel thing has been done to death....

All fuel is the same. The "big" brands however put in additives that do various things like improve the burn, clean injectors etc etc. Branded fuel really is better than supermarket fuel.

i dont understand the question howie.

Super unleaded used to be 98RON it is now 97RON, the british standard has been changed without any publicity.

If you find an Esso station with pricewatch they match/beat stations in the local area.
The independent Esso Station in Park Royal beats the franchised dealer two miles away near to Sainsbury by 1p/litre.
But what do I care, I moved so now I use BP and I don't even shop in Argos!

Inside the fuel flap of my MY00 there's a little sign that says Super unleaded only. Although my dealer says normal unleaded is just fine. As for brand's it's usually the only one in town that sells SUL you go for. I've run my MY00 on SUL since new and since my company pays for my fuel the extra expense is worth it(to me anyway). If you're paying for the fuel and doing normal mileage then use standard fuel. IMHO The difference is'nt that great and if, on the road you get in the situation where you need every bit of power you can get you are probably driving too fast and/or not paying attention.

I would always avoid supermarket fuel, purely on the quality issue. Wherever you live, petrol prices shouldn't differ too much with all the price matching going on. In fact, some garages here are cheaper than the supermarkets!!
Regarding SUL, after 45,000 miles of variuos testing in the last year, I have come to the following conclusions:

1) SUL gives better performance (if you drive 'enthusiastically')
2) SUL gives better protection (especially at track days, etc)
3) SUL gives better mpg (again, especially if driven hard)

All of the above reasons, especially no.3, justify paying that little extra for SUL in my opinion, as it costs no more than NUL per mile, not for me anyway.

Neil.
It says that on all Scooby flaps, because on the European mainland, NUL is referred to as Super.

Stef.

Hi all

I have a few questions about fuelling, I have a 1.6 non-turbo, Impreza, I fill each week with UL (95), would SUL(98) make any difference?

Plus my other question is, has anyone exactly used all the fuel in the tank? I was driving around one day when the little fuel light came on and the fuel needle was just on the E . but when I filled the car it only took 38 litres? (I know the hose at 90 degree angle fuelling tip!) Its a 50 litre tank.

Cheers

Bob.

I don't think it'd make much difference to a non-turbo. I could be wrong.
When your light comes on you have approx 2 gallons of fuel left (9-10 litres), so it's not far out.
I have taken the needle completely below the 'E' before!!!!

people say 'sul is too expesive so i,m putting in ul' i thought the same and ran my 00 in on ul, it felt like a right dog with no go in it so after about 1500 miles i tried sul for a few tanks and it felt alot better so now i always put sul in and sometimes have to put ul in when i cant find any sul and can feel the difference when booting it.

what i'm getting at is that sul is just over 1p a mile more so 10,000 miles a year is around £100 pa more than ul,when your driving a performance car like this then you've gotta be a tight f-ker to worry about a weeks groceries over a year.surely it's not worth wondering is there any difference in performance at such a small cost,

does any of that make sense?
se you at pod

The best thing you can do is pick a brand and then stick with it.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with quality, but you'll be using so much of the stuff you should get a loyalty card and start collecting points
