Or you could buy a quickshift...
Doing what you describe above shortens the throw of the lever for sure, the other approach is to move the pivot point which is what the quickshift's do.
I have the GGR which is pretty good. I've heard good things about Jamie Whitfield's shaft too (performanceexhausts.net - see their banner ad)

I highly recommend Jamies… quick shift (I was gonna say shaft, but I wouldn't know about that!) cost £100 ish? loads of adjustment, from standard movement, right up to the smallest, almost unusable movement. Easy to fit.
