Hey everyone, heres the story so far!!

Put an advert on Autotrader on the net on friday, Saturday afternoon I had sold it...

Bye Bye Scoobs

Following Wednesday, bought a 380bhp Escort Cosworth Really Nice!!!

Cheaper insurance

Then Last night put my foot down, for a bit of fun, Gearbox blew up!!! ARRGGHHH

So does anyone know of any Titanium Cosworth gearboxes up for sale??

Or does anybody have any good ideas of how to solve this, stop it happening again, and no I don't want to de tune it, not yet anyway!!!

write to mike rainbird or steve (dingy). Best bet s to ask the rs owners rather than scoob owners. You might find they a know a little more than we do.

Dont fret, it could have happened to anyone. Happened to me on my scoob, and the cossie gearbox is supposed to be much stronger, so you should be ok with a uprated rebuild.

Private or Trade Purchase
If ya only had it for a few days - the expression "Fit for Purpose" speings to mind - any recourse on the seller?

IMHO
I do not know who you got it from but, The gearbox only lasts a few days, kinda makes me wonder why they sold it in the first place???

A friend of mine has the same problem

Escort cossie true 374 bhp loses 3rd gear every 4-5 '000 miles! (real power cost him over £5000)

The only way to overcome this is the Ford motorsport box £20,000 - ouch

Not good news - Sorry

InsBro

Just checked with my friend his gear box is a Group N - and he still strips 3rd gear!?

Cool

When I bought it the owner had been burning through clutches like no ones business, so before he sold it he had a Paddle clutch fitted to cope.

And as for him selling it cos the gear box was on its way out, I don't believe that because there was no wining/noises, it was mint!!

Just one of those things!!

Take the car to Harvey Gibbs at SCS on 01733 325 101 and he will sort it no dramas.

It is unusual that the gearbox has failed but you will pleased to know that all things Ford are a lot cheaper than all things Jap

How does 400+hp for around £4.5k sound and that's mapped on an engine dyno?

Theres a much cheaper option to strengthan your g/box, you dont have to spend £20k!!

As Bird Nests says, give Harvey at SCS a ring, hell sort it out for you

Hows Harvey gonna help, if the gearbox isn't with him??

And 400bhp for 4.5k is expensive seems its already 380bhp, alot of cash for 20bhp, which I won't even notice??

Wink

Peter, that depends whether its a pub talk 380 .......ducking for cover!

Harvey is the man, when it comes to RS's. I've used him on my last 3 Cossys which have all been 330bhp conversions and none of them have missed a beat

Theres quite a few decent guys that will help you out with another box at a sensible price...just put a posting out on the RSOC BB parts wanted/For Sale

Out of curiosity what made you sell the scooby and buy a Cossy?

Nath

Well it has been feature in a magazine and Graham Hathaway has done it all, so it must be around the 380bhp mark!!

I sold the scoobs because there so comon now, and the escorts are so rare!! I love to be different!!

Peter

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm really tempted to sell the Scoob because it is so common now and the Esort Cossie is so rare. Every second car that passes me is a Subaru Impreza Turbo/WRX/P1 etc, etc.

Tell me, want prices should I be looking at for a "decent" Cossie nowadays?

Every second car that passes you?!?!

a) Drive faster!

b) Get it off the dealer's forecourt.

Ha ha!

Cool

Peter,
There are many different types of box's and internals you can go for to replace your existing MT75 unit........and you don't have to spend 20k to get it either.

You REALLY do need to find out what torque your engine is giving out....either by engine dyno or rolling road. This will steer you towards what type of box to get.

As I said you have many options, from shot peening your standard internals, to big tooth kits, to straight-cut, to straight-cut, dogged grp a boxes!!!!

I have just been on the phone to Quaife (cause I am in the same predicament as you, but will be running over 400+bhp soon), and they quoted my 9k for the latter!!!!!

A group N box in comparison will cost about 2.5-3k. All depends on your actual power and useage of the car, as I know somebody that has done 6k miles on a STANDARD box in a 400+bhp Escort and has had no problems (and that has been with a couple of track days and TWO runs at the pod!!!). At £500 a pop who gives a toss if you have to buy one a year, based on that reliability. Again it depends on HOW HARD you drive it and HOW OFTEN in that case.

I'm hopefully seeing Harvey Gibbs about this issue at the weekend, so if you want some information drop me an email and i'll help you out!!

Regards,
Shaun

One of the less tasteful results of running over 350bhp

Hope it doesn't cost you too much.
