How many people have met these unfortunate animals on our country roads??
Ive never hit anything like these, rabbits etc until this week where i clocked up 2 in my van
one being a little rabbit the other being a cat (i think) but it wasnt worth stopping for either as the sound of squished animal under cheap tyre didnt leave much to the imagination
So who else has had bad luck with them??

I hit a deer at about 70 on a dark A road a few years ago. It appeared so quick I didn't know what I had hit till I turned the van round an found it on the top of a hedge on the other side of the road (Scary). I have heard of them comming in through the windscreen so I guess I was lucky. My boss never believed me till the day I left the company (even when I showed him the fur stuck to grill!!)

Was on a "Mission" one night in Savernake Forest. Hit a deer. It smashed the hell out of the car. We all jumped out ,and the thing just ran off !!! The lights ,radiator and bumper where all over the place. Would hate to hit cow etc.....

Anything small I will just hit it. Sorry but too many folk die trying to miss the basterds.

Have to agree with you there Luke, it isnt worth swerving to avoid them, tried braking for the rabbit but that was too late and at 50mph all your going to do is make things worse, not sure if i killed it or not but the cat.... no point in ending up the same way really, squashed that is but would hate to hit anything bigger than rabbit/cat, ive heard badgers aint one for hitting either, they make a right mess of your car but you have to report them i think?

<B>I was coming home the other night and hit a rabbit with the front of the car, I braked hard and looked behind me and it hobbled off. I went back to check on it and it was looking rather limp on the grass verge, I didn't know what to do. A man was walking past with his dog and said what's up, I told him what happened and said we'd have to put it out of it's misery. "Just a minute" he said and removed a small bottle from his pocket and opened it and waved it under the rabbits nose. The rabbit jumped up and took off, I said "That's amazing, what's in the bottle.. Smelling salts?" to which he replied "No, Hare Restorer!!!"</B>

Once pulled out a small (dead) rabbit from the front bumper of Dad's last Legacy

Dare I say it, a dead squirrel was pulled out from the intercooler of an Impreza on a rolling road 3year ago or so

Hit rabbit after **** in car. I stopped, rabbit stopped. I went, rabbit went. Girlfriend was a bit shocked but she just said drive on. I wanted to reverse and make sure it was dead.

I have hit plenty of birds, including a pheasent, not pretty.

I have also hit a badger, which I did report.

Would never swerve to avoid an animal unless something big, i.e cow, deer, horse.

Tony,

Even though I've hit rabbits on country lanes, I must say that If I hit a cat I would feel obliged to get out and check if it did have a collar, as most cats are hit in or around built up areas, but it in the middle of nowhere, there's not a lot you can do really.
So depending on the speed, how would you know if it's guts were all over the place with first checking.

Rabbits (good - to many of them anyway)
Hare (pity)
Pheasants (taste good if not too mangeled)
Partridge
Pidgeon
Crow (good)
Deer
Loads of small birds - unknown provenence

Hit a pidgeon in my Landie, it went through the roo bar, which as sort of find around the wrap-around bits. It was like it went through a tea-strainer. It was really dead.

Hit a pheasant at 90 in a BMW, made a nasty mess of the wing. Never found it.

Haven't hit anything on the road recently but we quite a few hits on our test train.
Birds make quite a bang at 125! Fnar Fnar

Once had some large long beaked bird hit the front of a train at 100mph, which emdedded itself beak first into the GRP bodywork - it was still attached when we pulled into Peterborough station, much to the disgust of the passengers.

Once hit a stationary pigeon whilst driving the other half’s mini.... he just refused to budge after numerous beeps on the horn and as I was doing about 40 in traffic I didn’t have many options, so just winced a bit and hit ‘im, kinda sounded like hitting a ping pong ball, missus’ looks round and quickly turns back with hand over mouth and looking decidedly pale. I look in the mirror and yes, he’s still standing there but about 2 inches shorter!

Do humans count?

I ran over one of my mates once. He was stopped on his bike waiting to do a u-turn - he did a "life-saver" and didn't see me so basically he did a u-turn into a car (mini) doing 30mph. He bounced off the a-pillar.
He was ok(ish)

Hit a hare once - sickening shattering sound under the car.

Also clocked (but didn't kill) a cat at 30mph - it pulled out in front of me doing about 10mph, I beeped the horn, then did 10-30 in about 0.5 seconds. It then did 30mph for about 100 metres until we came to a tight right hander where it flew off into the bushes.
Cats are ****e round corners - dogs are much better.

Went over the a crest in my 306 doing about 80 to see a herd of (big red) deer all over the road.

Swerved round most of them, but then hit the last one full on. I hadn't slowed down much because I had tried to steer through instead.

Huge thump as I punted it off the road, nasty red smear all over the remains of the front of the car.

Needed new bonnet, BOTH front wings, headlamps, foglights, bumper, spoiler, radiator, grill...
And that little piece of plastic which covers the windscreen wiper mounting nut.

Still drove well though.

Fox vs. 80mph Scoob.

Cost ~£2000 to fix......the fox paid with it's life.
