Trackstar website says 96% of vehicle fitted with one which are nicked are recovered...
and average time from initialising tracking to recovery is under 30 minutes (not sure I believe that, but it's on the web so must be true)
Better odds than not having anything fitted!

Tracker will tell you on the phone their statistics of a recovery of 99% of stolen vehicles.
Trackstar which is satellite based and more expensive will inform you that if you fit their system you could be the lucky one in every tow people who get their cars back
Sod that, 50% is crap.
Best thing to do is get the cheapest tracker set up for £100 plus subscription. That will give you the discount you need on insurance. Then if your car goes walkies, dont tell em for ten hours. That way you wont get it back.
Thats what I'd do, as if some thieving scum gets it, I dont want it back!

All very impressive, but how many cars fitted with Tracker were actually stolen during that month? What proportion of the protected cars were actually recovered?
Sorry to sound cynical, but it's quite an expensive service and I'd want to be reasonably sure that I had a high chance of my car being returned, not just reassured that X number of cars like mine were recovered.
Andy.

Those are cars that had Tracker in them
Doesn't account for others (ie those without Tracker or those with Navtrak, Trackstar etc)
Let me see if I can get simillar stats from Navtrak...

Andy, Don't suppose there are any guarantees that Tracker will get your car back, but if your're car is stolen or the keys nicked or, god forbid, hi-jacked, you stand a better chance with it, than without it.

I think Andy is looking for
total cars protected by tracker stolen and
total cars protected by tracker recovered.
The RUC manage to recover loads of stolen cars in Belfast, just after they have crashed and burned, so the fact that 81 cars with tracker where recovered means nothing until we know how many where stolen and how many where stolen by joyriders

81 vehicles in the month
Tracker have a number of systems, these stats are their total. The Satellite systems are normally 99% recovered. The other system requires the police to have a receiver in the car. It has been known for the police not to stop the stolen car - because they are after the bigger fish!
One Insurance company lost 2 x M3's £62000 because of this in one month. They now only accept the satellite systems.

I seem to remember Tracker quoting that 95% of stolen cars fitted with Tracker are recovered. I just looked at their website and although they are happy to boast how many vehicles are recovered, they just omit to say what the percentage of the number stolen that is.

Thanks, that's the sort of info that I was looking for. I was merely pointing out that '81 recoveries' isn't a terribly useful statistic on its own without knowing how many cars fitted with the system were stolen in the first place.
If the recovery rate is in the high 90's (percentage wise) then I'm impressed; there were a number of threads on the pros and cons of tracking systems on the bbs last year and a number of people did question their effectiveness - hence my cynicism.
I wonder how many people are actually glad to get their cars back rather than getting the money from the insurance payout? Which is worse, an insultingly low payout or a car that's been thrashed? (Regular track users need not answer that one )
Andy.

Mind you, if they get the car recovered so quickly, then there {probably} isn't enough time to really thrash 'em.
I know with Navtrak that you can get a print out of journey, time & speed so you could use that to establish how much abuse your car may have received

When I spoke to Tracker last week they said that they'd recovered all-but-one cars stolen (and the reason they didn't recover that one was because they were given 3 duff contact numbers by the owner).
Lies ? Dunno.
If it's true, it's impressive.
