my01 performance with/without upgrades
#1
Having recently sold my car I amreconsidering purchasing an MY01 wrx, particoularly as I could get a great deal here in Italy.
I am however worried about performance; all mags seem to have posted about 5.8s to 60 and 17s to 100, when the old one managed 5.5s and 15s regoularly.
I've heard talks about the new one having a super-restrictive exaust....what sort of performance improvement can be expected by installing something like a scoobysport system from the cat back (I'd like to keep the cat). Is it true that on the my01 up to 20hp can be had by freeing up the back-box alone??
Thanks for the help,

you can certainly add about another 35-40bhp by changing the back box and mid section (remove cat) for something like a scoobysports setup.
i had a my01 for 3 months and had to get rid of it when i changed jobs, and i would say it took at least 3500 - 4000 miles to really start to loosen up properly.

There are an abundance of CATs on the new WRX.... there is a CAT in the UP pipe, DOWN pipe and centre section (which is in two bits).. So by removing the two piece centre section and back box, you get a fair increase, worth doing the air filter at the same time too, I've put an ITG panel in mine, seems to help. And of course, you are still able to pass an MOT (well probably).

What's that smell? - Ah! - bull**it
Pete Croney's car with full exhaust from turbo back dynod at 244bhp i.e. increase of 26bhp.
Pete hasn't dynod it yet with the cat in the turbo up-pipe removed, his experience and mine is that on the road it makes a noticeable difference at the top end - 4000 or so rpm upwards.
SS Backbox and take the rearmost cat out, leaving the catted up and down pipes in? - I doubt if you would get more than a 15bhp difference.
Chasing bhp is a smokescreen anyway - it's how it drives on the road, low and mid range torque that matters. Where the new WRX suffers is low end torque - particularly with hauling another 150kg around than the old car.

Dave,
so what would you suggest? My dealer tells me that the warranty is gone if the cats are gone (something about failures in OZ due to overheating of the down-pipe cat once the others are removed, and bits of stuff going into the turbo - ouch). So, without killing the warranty I can only remove the last cat + change to SS backbox = 15hp. Change the air filter element...maybe 2-5hp? So all-up I gain a 20hp total. How does the my01 perform with about 230-240hp and about a similar increment in torque. Forget about 0-60, a silly measure, but say on 0-100 (where on mags it has posted from a mediocre 17s to a terrible 18.6) would those increases bring it to 16s? 15s? The new car weights about 10% more than the old, but with those extra 20hp it should have about 8% more hp and more torque low down. So shouldn't it perform at least the same as the old one, and therefor tip into the 15s for 0-100?

EVO magazine timed a standard WRX 0-100 at 18.3 and a 242bhp UK300 at 16.6.
You would be lucky to get into mid 17's with just a backbox and centre cat removed on an otherwise standard WRX.
In any case, would the TED not be the most real world measure - in gear times 30-70 or whatever?
The only way to get significant performance increases from a MY01 is to invalidate the warranty - remove all three cats and change the ECU.
I'm NOT saying anyone should do this, just stating the facts......

No, not you!
....at the possibility of getting up to 40bhp on a MY01 by changing just the b/b and mid section - it just ain't gonna happen.[/quote]
no me !!!! i just remembered that talking to pete croney he said that you could get to 235bhp - 240bhp not an increase of 35-40bhp if you change the mid section and back box.
i'll get me coat.
