Motorola walkie talkies.

Just been reading the meets section, and it seems that I am not the only one with a motorola walkabout jobbie.
I bought mine for skiing holidays and teh fact that Cem and alex and a few others in nw london have them.
We use the same frequency all the time of 7/25, just wanted a polol to see if anyone else has them, and if so is teher anopther standard frequency on scoobynet.
call me sad, but ultimately it's true .

Adam,
I have two also, one blue and one yellow! I think mine may be fairly basic when compared to yours. I got them for skiing plus when on drives and also came in useful at the Cat rally earlier this year.
Cheers,
Mossman

I have pair but unfortunately not for the glamorous role of ski communications.
I use mine in the wonderful world of water leak detection. Just the job for speaking to a partner down the road while I coordinate turning off mains water.
Also bloody cheaper than using a mobile for same job.

Chris B uses a Motorola set on runs and also Charlie Whiskey but perhaps not the Motorola.
A few more of us are considering them but could do with a steer on specification and make.
I think channel 21 was favoured in the North

I *ahem* look after our two Motorola radio's from work... We brought them to save on mobile calls when we are setting up laser or wireless networking kit on roof tops.
We got the TA-288 which aren't the cheapest Motorola model but not the top of the range ones. We also brought the basic hands free kit (push-to-talk mic) which is ideal if you are driving one-up on a meet, along with a spare rechargable battery for each.
Generally, you can get a pair of Audioline units or other cheap brand (Binatone)for the price of a single Motorola model, although you will need to factor in the cost for a set of rechargeable batteries.
I can possibly beat shop prices if any one is interested?

Adam,
I have a few which we use for various things such as Karting, when we have a bunch of cars together etc. The other main use is that most of my Bike (Motor) buddies have intercoms and PMR radios so I have a Kenwood connected to my Bike Intercom so we can chat when we ride - it's cool!!!!!
For the Bikes we use 4/4 (in Motorola terms) but this is expressed differently when using other makes of radio (Kenwoood, ICOM etc.)

We tend to use 2/1 on meets, as that uses a CTS which is the same on most makes of radio.
Be careful as they are NOT all the same as regards CTS 'sub channels' so 2/3 could be 2/4 on another make or not even be recievable. Always 'synchronise channels' and try them out before a meet (Oh, and tell banshi where the 'Push to Talk' button is )
Also some Motorola ones will not let you turn CTS off.
I have the details of some sets and how their channels do not match if anyone has any problems.
The best value ones I have found are from

I agree with CharlieWhiskey,
Maplins have quite a choice of PMRs now, including a pair of rechargeaables at a bargain price in their current summer offers (GBP99 i think).
For those that don't know, PMR446 radios are licence free, and have up to 8 channels. However each channel can be subdivided so that pressing the talk button will only affect other radios on the sub-channel.
Works well, with a range of up to 3KM i think - enough for keeping in touch when driving.
