Legacy Given The Impreza Treatment
After terrorising supercar owners with its excellent Impreza STi, Subaru is preparing to move into the big league with this highly tuned edition of the Legacy.
These are the first official pictures of the luxurious saloon, which was launched in Japan earlier this week. It is powered by a twin-turbo flat-four engine capable of producing nearly 300bhp.
Although the car isn't destined to make an official appearance in the UK through main dealers, grey importers are rubbing their hands in glee. The hot model is expected to go on sale here early next year, priced from £32,000.
It's the first time Subaru's tuning arm, STi, has turned its attention to the Legacy, but a quick look at the specifications suggests engineers had few problems in deciding exactly what needed doing. As well as its potent 2.0-litre boxer engine, the cut-price BMW M5 rival sports a six-speed gearbox, four-wheel drive and limited slip differentials on both axles.
The car will also feature uprated brakes, as well as revised suspension settings inspired by the more robust system fitted to the Impreza. These changes will ensure that the new Legacy is both safer and more stable at the limit, and that it's capable of slowing quickly in the event of an emergency.
On the road, the performance upgrades promise to leave rivals trailing. The Legacy STi's 0-60mph sprint should take only 6.5 seconds, while the top speed is expected to touch 155mph. Inside, the changes are equally impressive. A glance around the cockpit reveals the Japanese firm had no trouble ensuring this high-performance executive machine lost none of its appeal during its transformation into a supersaloon.
Leather seats, sat-nav and a high-quality sound system are all offered as standard, while the dashboard, steering wheel and gearlever gaiter are all finished in colour-coded trim. Impressive as this car is, though, it marks only the beginning of Subaru's aims for its experienced STi unit.
The firm is said to be working on a high-performance edition of the Forester, which would use a virtually identical engine and running gear as the Impreza STi. This car would boast 265bhp, but there'd be no need for buyers to go to the grey dealers for it, as it's expected to go on sale in the UK officially late next year.
In 2003, Subaru will unveil its all-new Legacy, designed to replace the model range currently crowned by the machine revealed here. But this time, the firm will waste no time in producing a flagship STi. Initial work is said to have already begun, and the car is being designed as a true global product, so it will meet tight European emissions and safety regulations. It will go on sale here in 2005.

Mmmm... STi Legacy. That's my next car decided then (but only if they do an estate version!).
Tried a Saab 9-5 Aero a couple of weeks back - plenty of performance, but it's soggy and ill-handling compared to the WRX wagon.... A Legacy STi Estate would solve the space/performance dilemma!
