Cooking Oil..In a Diesel.Why is it illegal???
#6
I have just bought a diesel with the intention of running it on fat oil, kerosene mix, there are some good websites with info on it,fukc the tax thing we pay for it with the scoob.
Now must get down the local chippy.

i think its because many people like indian and chinese food - a
nd using this oil is only 'sensory advertising' up their nostrils.
Seriously though - it just shows you what some people will try - I thought red diesel was the stuff to use (or not according to the law). What next, tomato ketchup in my Punto instead of oil?

There some service stations that sell recycled cooking oil legitimately as an alternative fuel.
I guess some people have got to hear about this, are picking out the black bits of Captain Birds Eye and chips then putting it in their tank.

So what happens if you use your own waste cooking fat.... you've already paid for it and used it legitimately for its intended purpose and instead of polluting the place with it you're just recycling it. Do you have to pay duty on it for both purposes?

The cooking oil showed on TV was only about 40p a litre, sounds like an excellent idea
Does anyone have specifics about what mixtures you need ?
(yeah yeah I know....but its not for the scoob)

Marty - you can't use any fuel without first paying duty on it - regardless of whether you bought it for your chip pan or not
Red diesel is simply normal diesel with a red dye in it (soon to be changed to a yellow dye I believe) - used for agricultural vehicles and boats. This retails for around 30p a litre.
The diesel engine was originally designed to run on peanut oil so I guess anything similar will work - not sure how happy the government will be though!
You can run your car on cooking fat as long as you pay duty.
BTW anyone thinking of doing this and not paying the duty, the maximum penalty for tax evasion is 7 years. Don't think the government won't want to make an example of some poor unfortunate guy.

Can't see the problem myself.
If I wanted to run a vehicle on Methanol and Cooking Oil and its passes the emmisions tests then surely thats my business
Anyone know any good methanol suppliers ?

As the guys say - you can't use anything as a fuel unless you give Customs & Excise a major lump of cash as duty.
Doesn't matter if you bought the oil for another purpose, used it for that purpose and now want to 'recycle' it in your diesel car If you use it as fuel in a vehicle used on the public highway, you owe C&E - end of story.
Of course, if you have a large private drive/old airfield etc (as we all do for max speed testing our Scoobs) then you can use what fuel you like.
BTW, this is vegetable oil you need - DON'T use animal fat based oils as they will clog any fuel system almost instantly due to the high level of fatty deposits in the oil.
Best veg oil is considered to be either rape seed or sunflower, but you still need to mix it with diesel/methanol really. You also get into building heated fuel systems, separate tanks for the oil, etc. etc.
And if anyone's thinking of trying this on their old banger, on private land obviously , check to make sure you've got a Bosch injector pump - the Lucas/CAV ones are too weak and can jam, causing the cambelt to break!
Of course, this is just stuff I've heard from a bloke in the pub/on the internet/wherever so don't blame me if you get nicked or break your shiny new Golf TDi!
Cheers,
Steve

So what fuel duty should it carry?
It isn't Diesel, or petrol or LPG. Since LPG is still a petroleum of sorts, why doesn't it carry the same duty, of that's right it's better for the environment. Say, wouldn't it be good if we could run our cars on a renewable energy source, wouldn't that be good for the environment?
hang on a second...

Pavlo - when you see Shell & Esso buying lots of arable land, start to worry!
FRP, don't mention it to them, the bu88ers will probably try!
Sorry, but I don't know the details of duty etc., but if you want an example of totally over the top reaction to one guy who was interested in the theory so tried to make a small batch of 'alternative fuel' from veg oil see here: http://www.northwales.org.uk/bio-power/hmvisit.htm
Be afraid - the powers that be have nothing better to do (IMHO)!

Steve

Pavlo, nice try but I think Oakley sunglasses might have got there first with their Thermonuclear Protection branding!!
Right, I'm just off to try breaking water down to power my Scoob on the H bit of H2O!!
Doing my bit for the ozone layer by putting twice as much oxygen back for all the happy bunnies and birds to breathe (before I cook them in my Diesel car's exhaust!)
Cheers,
Steve

Sorry Fizz, don't know mate.
The only electric cars I've ever driven seemed to be good at accelerating but very poor at handling - they kept flying off the track and disappearing under the sofa; either that or the dog would run off with them and bury them in the garden - good at landfill our dog!
