Aparrently now if the modded exhaust is louder than the standard one (which they always are!)then it is up to a police mans discresion (sp) when he stops you wether it is too loud or not-this overides any certificate you may have at home to say it is legally under the sound limit. They are allowed to give an 'on the spot' £30 fine. Spoke to a police man bout this and said that most will leave you alone its just the young cops who have just started wanting to prove something that may stop you and i was like 'well thats f**king good £30 fine evey day where ever i go'. Anyone else heard of this?? Rant over

Question

How can they prove its louder than the standard one that came with the car. Do they have a lookup sheet that tells them?

Can't see how its enforcable.

im not sure thats the case, although we (on the PGAC) have got a similar thread about a GTiR guy getting fined. The only law at the mo is it must be under 75decibels or something at 5000RPM.

There is a legal noise limit allowed on the highway, that is higher than any production system, so they cannot use that ruling.

God help the copper that tries that one on me, after having my car noise tested on circuits all over the country/europe, i know it is legal.

ffs country is turning into a nanny state, if this is true. This is like the customs scenario where theyre allowed to sieze your motor and whats inside, then sell it at auction, if THEY think youve got an excessive amount of booze or ****

I just dont like the 'discretion' bit, that can mean anything really. The amount of times ive seen the law lack common sense dosent bear thinking about-no offence to any police with common sense.

Seems typically petty if the modded exhaust is within legal limits anyway. Do I hear the clank and groan of additional revenue earning?

To everyone with the Hayward & Scott SS back box, I think they're 89dB at their loudest which I read is still within prescribed noise tolerances.

Can anyone clarify this one way or the other? (can you hear me Pete Croney?)

Sorry for this, but it stinks of yet another revenue earning trick from your friend and mine, let's hear it for......................................."Tony the TAXER".

That's a point. My exhaust was fitted in Japan. Don't they have stricter/lower legal noise levels over there than here?

Apparently all down to descretion of the officer.

i got pulled a while back in my old p1 with a full ss system, id booted it past the parked coppers , about 5000 rpm, full boost, they chased after me, said my car was noisy, i told them i had the optional back box, they asked me to blip the throttle with the plod stood behind the car, he came back to me and said sorry but it seemed louder when i passed them, and on my way i went

What about competition exhausts? My 'grale has a group A exhaust and I am guessing if it's group A it should be road legal? Is there any official info on this issue?

And another thought. What about induction noise? A car on throttle bodies or 40s or something but a standard exhaust can be very loud even inducion kits can be very loud. where would you stand on that?

Oh how much fun is this ruling going to be when my friend and I get his kit car on the road. It will barely get through the SVA noise tests as it is! (I think the limit is in the high 90s of dBs...)

(and I don't know what the standard exhaust is for this kit car is - if it's the doner car's then it simply won't fit...)

I think a lot of police officers are going to have to get their ears calibrated for this to work... Next they'll be allowed to give out speeding tickets without any evidence at all!

Well I would say they have been going this way for sometime now.

Three times I have been pulled for sounding like I was breaking the speed limit!

The third time it happened resulted me going to the local Police stations and complaining about the area car drivers harassing me.

If this is true then it is a stupid... what baout all the bangers driving around with smoking and blown exhausts?

Enough said.........
Maybe plod should be asking drivers for all documents, then maybe our premiums will be reduced.
We all see cars with expired tax discs on the road and i can guess they dont have mots and insurance either!!
Oh my god what have i just started!!

Couldn't be exactly sure what was going on but it looks like I've seen them doing a chap with a modded Astra which lives behind me. A couple of coppers were at the house looking at the exhaust and I was curtain twitching at my back window. Anyway his exhaust mysteriously became quieter afterwards although it wasn't overly loud to begin with.
