Question

Need some advice please.....

Just bought an MY99 4dr Turbo. Was about to pick it up from the dealers tomorrow. Had a phonecall from the dealer saying that whilst the car was in for an MOT, the dealer mechanics noticed that Number 2 piston is knocking. Obviously, this has a knock-on effect to my picking up the car tomorrow.

However, is number 2 knocking also known as Piston Slap?

If not, what is it?

The dealer has said that I can't have the car until they & Subaru have sorted out the problem (good) under warrantee, as it will be at no cost to me I presume that I could be looking at a new engine

Please bear in mind that the dealer could have kept quiet and I would have ended up with a situation like another Scoobynetter.....

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

(PS also posted in drivetrain - Thanks for the reply John )

I presume your car is a 99MY ?

I read all the posts saying that piston slap only affected 98 and 97 cars and was solved with the phase II engine (99MY). But my 99MY needed a new short engine under warranty after self-destructing.

In a way it's good if they put a new short engine in (£2000+) as it will be covered for a further 3 years /60000m on top of whatever the mileage is now. I had a new clutch fitted at the same time as well - I just paid for the parts at cost and saved the £400 labour. Another idea depending on the mileage ?

Exclamation

If they do replace the engine that's great - but think about the time when you sell the car. If like me you're looking at used cars a replacement engine is a big put off. Has the car been mistreated so much that the engine let go? Nine times out of ten this will not be the case but the seeds of doubt are sown.
Food for thought...

Granted - when I do change, I'll go back to a dealer and p/ex. This saves on the hassle of sorting out the finance....

Yes, it was an MY99 with 60K on the clock.....

Good point about the clutch....

Will have to wait and see when a decision is (hopefully) made next week....

Cheers peeps,

Dan
