It isn't going to happen in this model cycle. The platform can't take 4wd.

Try again in 2004/5

The new Focus is out next year. But far more interesting is that the Mazda 3 will also have a 2 litre turbo 4wd MPS version built on the same platform. Now, which will be better built...

As to the Top Gear test. The Scoob was beaten by 6 seconds. The CTR beat the WRX by 2 seconds and lost by 4 secs to the RS.

Thumbs up

The lap times are

RS 1:33.8
Civic 1:39.2
WRX 1:39.4

I'm sure Clarkson is going to slag the RS off for being difficult to drive but those times should go someway to balancing the review.

Just a couple of things to say,
Ford is FWD=no transmission losses,
If Ford use their most powerful car,SUbaru should do the same and come out with the STI, i wonder who would come out on top then?
Ford = Common as muck(even though subarus are fast becoming common), rep car, the list goes on.

Totally agree. How often do you find yourself gunning it around a track!!! Once or twice a year for the mild enthusiast!

I disagree about pitching the Ford RS against the STI.

The right comparison is the RS against the WRX, similar power and price.

If you have had a look at thieir (FRS) website they are saying the the FRS is the car they want, One that is a bit fussy and is an enthusiasts car BUT my average may be put off by TG report and plumb for WRX.

My attitude is that the RS is a bit of an unknow at the mo and if I want to enjoy enthusiastic driving I will get an other Caterham

WRX + PPP = 20,600
RS = 20,000

Yep close but notice the one tested was a WRX no PPP .

I disagree. The focus RS is the current top of the range focus. The uk wrx is the bottom of impreza range and is little more than a breathed on family car. I know I'll upset a lot of buyeye drivers when I say this but when I drove the wrx I couldn't help but feel the magic of the classic shape was missing. I felt like I was driving any other fast 4 door saloon. So there is an argument for comparison between the STI and the RS.

The main point being I havent seen one person post that they are trading their cossie in for an RS Focus but seen quite a few saying they are after a scoob after owning a cossie. I am sure if you are use to a family saloon/hatchback and drive an RS Focus you will be blown away. A guy I work with has a 206GTI and he was gobsmacked when he went in my classic RA and his 206 doesnt hang about. Even a mate with a TVR was impressed but more with the noise and wet grip than performance .

Who cares if the RS was quicker round a track than the Scoob, there have always been cars faster on and off a track ...ok so the RS is comparable on price .... guess thats the difference .... but for me personally i wouldn't switch to the Ford for 3 reason ... 1)it doesn't come with 5 doors, i've got a Wagon and its regularly loaded with 2 kids and accompanying car seats, plus a German Shepard in the back ....2)its not 4WD .... 3)is never going to sound as good as the flat four with a decent exhaust on.

I don't think so. What about the 1.6 TS 5 Door
Sports Wagon AWD isn't that the bottom

You certainly cant match the STI as it has over 260BHP and RRP is over £26K for the pro-drive

The bottom line is the RS is a hot-hatch and the WRX and scoobys are not. The scoob should be compared to the Mondeo, Vectra, 3 series, etc. The RS plays with the civic, 172, etc. If your wanting a 4 door performance saloon your hardly going to be test driving the RS Focus are you!!! Rest my case
