I am trying out the RAIN X product on the windscreen of my STi7 and on a morning like this it has had a very good test.

It is like a very high performance glass polish which once applied allows the incoming raindrops to bead and run off the screen instead of just lying there ready for your windscreen wiper to clear it.

Vision is greatly increased at all speeds and over 40 mph you do not need the wipers on at all.

The same type of product is available from Halfords who also bottle their own version. ( I'm not connected with either of them just a consumer )

Give it a try, it is a great way to achieve better visibility during these long wet days.

( Mods: I know that technically this is in the wrong section but could leave this message here for a while for a few others to catch as it kinda road safety thing )

Thanks

Acriv, I gave Rain-X a try just recently and thought it was great and will continue to use it.

I *did* use my wipers though !

Don't you find that the RainX smears under the wiper blades?

I used it on the rear and side windows but not on the front for that reason.

Hi Barnaby

My application does not smear at all even at night under headlamp glare.

Try this out -

Make sure the screen is clean to start with ( a wash and leather is good enough )

Apply product with a piece of paper kitchen roll and let it dry to a haze ( 2 - 3 minuutes ), importantly then wipe over it again with a clean damp cloth (I used a small piece of old towel), let that dry and finally polish it off with a dry clean cloth.

Bet it won't smear.

Regards

Ahh, right. So it's down to getting a really good application.

Only tried it once and that was many years ago. So will give it another try.

Cheers!

You can try the above method out on mine if you want, Neil, and see if it makes a difference!

Fat chance Seriously though, I was expecting much more from what I've read on here - didn't think it made much difference at all..........

Scooby Jawa - Maybe try a second application - this stuff does do what is says on the bottle. Water beads and runs off at 40mph plus. Great for motorway cruising.

Cool

Used it for years and it is certainly a safety aid above about 40mph when the wipers are almost redundant. Most useful in torential rain when wipers would otherwise be on fastest setting and limitting visability. I use wipers as little as possible to lengthen the period between applications and ensuring the screen is clean and Rainex is applied properly is vital to obtain the benefits.

I tried a similar product which comes in a pink ***** shaped container, it was very good for a couple of months.

When the application started to wear I found it difficult to completely clean the glass prior to re-application, the subsequent application was OK when the wipers were NOT used, but the screen was not clear when the wipers were used.

I used it on a previous car and loved it on the mototways but got fed up with 'the smearing effect' on the windscreen and ended up using it on the sides, rear and mirrors where it was useful.

I'm sure that the condition of your screen, the application technique and the re-application frequency are all important factors but at worst it can turn each individual 0.5ml drop of water into 'a million' 5^-7 micro-droplets and this where the problmem lies.

I have heard some folk say that a claybar can help you clean your screen and that you can use bodywork wax but of course once it is pitted, there is not much you can do to revive an old screen.
