Cam Belt Renewal - Is Age a Factor?
#1
![Question](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
My Impreza Turbo is coming up for its 45,000/3 year service. This service should include renewal of the cam belt, but the mileage is only 22,000. I appreciate the importance of changing the cam belt but I do not like wasting money. I would rather wait until, say 30,000 miles, which should still be on the safe side, assuming that wear is judged solely by mileage. Does anyone know if age is a factor here, which, of course, would alter my thinking.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Personally I would have it done. The belts can perish with age and the cost of having it done is small change compared to the cost of not having it done, if you see what I mean. 450 quid for full service compared with 2 grand or more for engine damage.

It certainly can be as the belts perish due to heat/humidity too. Believe me, you don't want it to go or you'll certainly rue the day you 'saved' the money. As long as it's a major service that it's having then it'll be more economical to get it done then anyway.

The cam belt on the Subaru engine is very long compared to most other engines due to the flat 4 layout. Consider it's a peice of rubber that gets rosted when driving, and frozen in the winter. Change it would be my advise. Subaru did extend the change interval to 4 years / 60000 miles for 00MY+ tho.

Nigel
I bought my Turbo last December exactly to the day it was 3 years old and the dealer Listers of Worcestor failed to do the 3year/45,000 mile service, When I bought the car it had only covered 30,000 miles So they decided to do only a 30,000 mile srvice and not the 3 year 45,000 that had should be done.
I didn't know this till I took it in to my local dealer who pointed out that the 3 year service should be done despite the milage after a long agrument and involving Subaru UK Listers agreed to pay for the service which was done by my Local dealer who pointed out that these guidelines are laid down for a reason by Subaru, If a problem had happened with my cambelt Listers would have been responsible because they did not follow the guidelines laid down by Subaru they tried to tell me that my car had been over serviced which to me and the dealer is a load of rubbish, So my advice is have the cambelt done or you might be facing a huge bill for an engine rebuild.
Cheers

As Subaru stipulate, every 45,000 miles OR 3 years. That's either OR.
You're driving a decent performance car, don't skimp on servicing.
