I picked up my spanking new 2001 MY WRX from Town & County in Perth on Sunday. What is the consensus on running in ? I have been diligently staying under 4000 RPM but on the way home was baited by an X-Type Jag and almost went for it. Does it really make all that much difference ?

I did go over a couple of times but only redlined once when I couldn't resist it and at 4500 miles is loosening up nicely - it just seems to get quicker & quicker.

I suppose it depends a lot on how many miles you do and what sort of roads you're on. I ran it in in just over a week but I don't think I could have held out as well as I did for longer. On the motorway fluctuating between 3500/4000rpm still is 80-90 miles an hour.

Enjoy the motor though, I love mine.

I have been very strict and I find my self relaxing a bit more as I go between business meetings, but I will have another week to go.

Same problem....brand new UK300 with PPP..and told to keep it below 4krpm!

I must admit...even at 4krpm in top gear its pushing 100mph...but you need to take it to 5-6krpm sometimes. (pulling away from tossers...overtaking slow cars etc)

My scooby dealer said it wasn't going to be a problem if I didn't go stupid and constantly redline it. To be honest..even now I'm at 4k miles...I've never had to redline as its so bloomin fast.

The instruction is ...use it with respect....as when you have your 1k service....you have a complete oil change which I was told was a better composition to handle true scooby performance.

Before the 1000 mile service, the UK Imprezas use "running-in" oil in the engine. This is deliberately thinner than the stuff that goes in after 1000 miles so that the moving parts can literally grind off any rough edges when the engine is running.

The running-in oil doesn't protect the engine as well as the normal stuff, hence you should take it easy to begin with.

After 1000 miles, thrashing the nuts off it might make it quicker than gradually winding up the revs over the next few thousand miles, but it might also turn it into an old smoker by 50k miles.

You pays your money, you takes your choice...
