Stolen, not recovered. How long should I be waiting before an insurance payout ?
#1
Hello all,
Does anybody know the kind of time period it takes between the car being stolen and getting some kind of payment from the insurance company ? My WRX was stolen from the Leeds area 6 weeks ago and the insurance company have only just got round to calling the police regarding the statement I made to them. I was under the impression that a claim would be settled within 6 weeks but maybe I am wrong. The insurance company say that because the car has not been recovered it complicates the claim.
This is starting to get expensive for me as I am hiring a car out of my own pocket in the meantime @ £175 a week
Cheers
Muncher.

I had my Impreza and 540i nicked off my drive in June. The Impreza was found the same day after driving the liverpool police mental, but the BMW never turned up.
I think it was about six weeks before i got my first offer, then I got paid out approx four weeks later after a load of haggling.
Best put some pressure on your broker.

ps. anyone who has there car stolen and never recovered with a private reg on it needs to inform their insurance they want to keep the reg, or the sneaky b*stards will claim it as part of the payment (without telling you).

It's quite simple re the private plate.
You just tell your insurer that in the event of a total loss the plate is your property (not quite true, actually, because at best you only rent it from the DVLA ) and does not form part of the salvage......
It's not quite as devious as RRH says - if the insurer pays you out on a total loss they are putting you in the position you were in before the loss, and the salvage becomes theirs. Many people sell a car with a private plate on, and unless you tell them otherwise they are not going to know.

Apparently if the car is not recovered that the plate is on, you have to wait for 12 months before you can apply to have it put on retention or transferred.
Roll on next June

That does make sense. If the car is stolen to be used in a robbery in six months time, do you want the plate reissued to you next week and have the fuzz come round in six months with you trying to find an alibi
