glowing turbo
#1
Had a good spin last night whilst meeting up with the RSOC in scole, norfolk. We pulled up and popped the bonet to find my turbo was doing a fine impression of a translucent tangarine. It must have done this many times before however it's the first time i have noticed. Does anyone know if this is likely to cause any major damage. The car did idle for around 4 mins with the bonnet open and seems to run the best it has ever done today!

You shouldn't do any harm to a turbo running it at that sort of temperature - they will run considerably hotter than that (to the point of going translucent ). As Craig says, that is why you need to let the car idle afterwards to allow the turbo to cool down with the oil flowing through it. If you don't, it will burn up the oil in it to gunge.
Obviously a spirited run .
