I got my Scooby from Bentleys, main dealer in Sheffield, in December and was assured that the alarm was Cat 1, although they hadn't the VSIB certificate they were going to try to contact previous owners to try and find it.

Suffice to say I've heard nothing since, the insurance is now due and the new policy is conditional on proof that it has Cat 1 (or 2 strangely enough).

I spoke to one Security installer this morning who reckons the Sigma SG2 fitted is not Cat 1....if it ever was?

How do I get this sorted? Do I bite the bullet and rip out the SG2 and get something fitted which is up to the 'NEW' Cat 1 spec?

Can I get someone to inpect the current system and see if it's Cat 2 (pressuming it doesn't meet the 'NEW' Cat 1 spec?

Get something cheaper fitted that satisfies Cat 2 for immobilisation and keep the SG2 as the alarm?

All suggestions gratefully recieved!

Chris

Chris.

Personally I'd simply fit a complete new alarm if nobody knows the category of the existing one.
It's simply a way out for the insurance company if you ever need to claim.
Be safe, not sorry.

CW,
it's the installation quality and the alarm itself which make up the Cat 1 rating.

I deliberately asked not to have one fitted in Belgium. I'd call Sigma and ask them on 01928570570.

Got a Cat 1 Autowatch fitted the day I got it home.

CharlieWhiskey,
Sorry to hear abt your probs.
My dealer also didn't have any VSIB documentation for the alarm or immobiliser. I got him to write down what he verbally promised with respect to Cat 1 / Cat 2 on letter-header paper, which I then sent to my insurance broker by registered post. Didn't hear anything back from them so it must be ok(?).

Basically, if the car gets nicked & it all goes pear shaped I have at least got some written evidence.

Maybe it's not too late to go back to the dealer and get their phoney assurances in writing!

Good luck.

Suresh

P.S. Bought a Disklok "pacman" jobby in any case. bbs advice was that car thieves hate the bloody thing.

I heard a rumour a while back that a company that made/fitted cat-1's went out of business and as a result all the insurance companies scratched that kit off their cat-1 books...

CharlieWhiskey - definitely follow up with the dealer. Problem is if your car is nicked now, the insurance company may refuse to pay.

Cheers Folks,

I will ring Bentleys again in the morning, and if I can't get anything sorted I will just have to insure the Cavalier (which hasn't been sold yet) whilst I get the Scooby fitted with something different

Suresh: Yes you're right. A Disklok was the first thing I bought for it!

Oh well, never mind, at least I've had a MY99 Sport on hire for work since Friday to keep me entertained - pity I couldn't keep that for a few more days :-(

Yep, already investigated the Thatcham site, SG1/2 are not even listed so I don't know if it has ever been Cat1.

If it never has been Cat1 then I will be giving Bentleys a serious bit of verbal! I don't know if I can get anything out of them under the 'Sale of Goods Act' or whatever? I will have to start off diplomatically I suppose...watch this space!
