Reckon my clio cup was a bargain :-

Just had a cross country tangle with a MY99 turbo in my Cup (B roads & country lanes) He came flying past me when i was sleeping (so 2 speak) so i banged it down to 2nd from 4th and gave chase and sniffed his diff for the next 4 or 5 miles or so, max speed about 85 i think - couldn't loose me....seems that in 'Real world' driving there ain't a lot in it even with 4 wheel drive !

See you on the Track...........

The Cup is certainly a very serious 'tool'! It wasn't too far behind the Clio Cup Race Car(I think less than 2 seconds slower per lap), when Evo tested them last issue! When at knockhill the clios consistantly post among the highest average lap speeds over the weekend, that gives you an idea of how capable the Cup is round the twisties!!

No air-con, no power windows, crappy build quality, nasty plastic trim
It would be Scoob for me anyday no matter how well it might keep up

Flat,
i think its because renualt have wonderful build quality (and even now have issues with the Cup!) and the 172's are quick cars when they are not back in the workshop getting rattles and squeaks fixed (dont have any on the scoob and she's 30 months old now )
Says it all i think

Should also point out that my exhaust/clutch/gearbox/bearings etc are still the original ones but the build and quality of the clio's suck (and ive owned 3 renaults!)

had to sell my scoob a few months back cos of getting a company car. would not expect the 172 to keep up with a scoob assuming to good equal drivers.

clio good but its not a scoob. still 14.5k brand new is

British Leyland built better cars in the 70's
Renault have never been famed for build
I had a Fuego in the early eighties. What a bag of nails. Must say it was the worst car I ever had the misfortune to own. Wifes old Morris Marina put it to shame at the time....Blutes

I took up the offer of a drive in a Clio 172 the other day. Looking forward to giving it a blast then noticed it only had 10 miles on it!! Goona ask to borrow in a couple of weeks time when its loosened up a bit. Good little motor though.

I do have a soft spot for fast Renaults. 5GT was one of the most fun cars I've ever driven and I owned a Clio RSi for 3 years and 44000 miles with nothing going wrong, no squeaks or rattles! Sold it to a friend who still has it with 90000 miles on it and still nothing has gone wrong. Miracle!

I don't think the build quality is the issue here, is it? Everyone that ownes a 172 will tell you that the build quality is sh1te!! Nobody buys a Teg-R for refinement, do they?

Lot of ignorance about Renaults here. I owned a R5 for 95k and practically nothing went wrong or fell off it. Sure they develop squeaks and rattles when they get old but so do scoobs.

I own a Cup at the moment (and a P1) and am v impressed with it. So far rattle free and a damn site more reliable than a Mini Cooper and various VWs owned by other members of my family.

My first problem with the 172 would not be build quality, but the weird driving position, which would suit a lorry better than it would suit a sports hatch. And then there's the steering wheel - argh - why is it so big and vertical. I guess that Renault contribution to the society was making the driver of the 172 feel like he is driving a 20 tons vehicle. One claustrophobic lorry that is.

But then, handling is brilliant. A friend of mine owns one, and had some problems (front shock mounts got lose, mechanic said it's because of powerful FWD on crappy road). I prefer the engine to that of the Impreza, less powerful (or should I say brutal), but you gotta appreciate lack of turbo.. so responsive!
Nice car, and running costs aren't much of a difference than a standard 1.4 (at least here in Israel they are not, insurance is practically the same). Very refined for what it is, overall.

My old Clio 1.8 16v was fantastic fun. Much preferred it to my 150 Bhp 205 1.9 Gti.
I think my MY99 rattles more than the Clio ever did. But who cares about rattles? they are the reason God invented Magnex and K&N

Apart from the electric windows, that's a Subaru all-over.

Cheers

We (me & Wilf) went out in our P1 & Cup at the weekend, and have to say that having both is great fun - the P1 would of course always get my vote, but the Cup is fantastic considering it's performance and price
