Import is likely to be the cheaper option, but by how much? Until IM announce the UK prices it's not possible to know. Thus you don't know which is the best option.

I'd speculate that the Import will still be thousands cheaper, but what if IM drop the price of a WRX to £20k and the Euro exchange rate drops to 1.5? The margin may only be £1.5k then, probably still worth it, but the not the mega savings before.

I'm by no means anti Euro (I've got one myself). I just think it's too early to make the call

PS Did you get the Vicarage in Walsden?

havin read many previous threads, euro import seems the way to go, especially when yer can register the warranty with subaru uk.

personally, i dunno if i could take the aggravation of doin it myself/uncertainty of spendin that much cash with a company yer've never heard of....

I'd order from Europe and find a company who fix the exchange rate for you, Eurekar.com have been highly recommended on this forum so far and I think they fix the rate for you.

Thumbs up

Eurekar did the business for me but the wait was 9 months. Fantastic price though £15,300, MY00, painted sills DBM, I've seen cheaper but this included cat 1 alarm delivery to my door and a bunch of flowers for the wife.

I had to sell it about 12 months ago after 13 fantastic months driving the car of my dreams. Got offered the odd silly money but didn't want any test pilots/scum round at the house so eventually sold it to a dealer for £14200 with 11,000 miles.

With hindsight I think I got a good deal...cheapest car I ever owned from new!

If I could afford a MY03 I'd place an order without question but we moved house and it'll be a couple of years before I'm back in a scooby again.

If you use someone like Keyring Cars then they act as agents for your import. Most of your money is paid directly to the European dealer who is of course a listed Subaru main dealer and as reliable as any similar UK dealer. The only money you pay the agent is their fee, which is only about £200, so not much risk compared to the potential savings Other monies like delivery, alarm etc. may be paid to the agent, or you can organise collection yourself, therefore pretty safe.

Have not heard any horror stories about any of the well known import companies, so don't worry.

NaTurbo2000, what was the setup, deposit and final payment date etc, do you reckon they'll hold their value for the first year or drop because of import

I started looking straight after the Paris Motorshow - agreed with Eurakar on 29th October - but nothing final until I paid deposit of £3400 (of thereabouts) on 12th November. Final payment is 3 weeks prior to delivery (although I don't know that is yet ) - dealer reckons could be ready some time in March.

I made sure I'd agreed some conditions like being able to back out if the new price went up more than 5% etc. (Subaru Benelux have since announced that they'd honour MY02 prices on any pre-orders).

Value will go down as always, but it doesn't bother me too much - this one's a keeper (hence getting the plate etc)

If anyone is interested you could order direct from dealer in Holland. Used a dealership near Hook van Holland 2 yrs ago - very impressed and would go back.
Cost silly money for car then about 12.5K before transport and VAT was added on.

On the subject

I am having a touch of cold feet ordering an import through an import agent

This is why, there is a point in the deal when you have paid your deposit and the money in full to the dealer abroad in euros plus the transport cost and the agent’s fee in Stirling to get the car to your door this is roughly two weeks or more before you get it

Now these are the problems the may occur

1 The car may not arrive at all, and you loose the lot

2 It could be scratched / dented / bits missing

3 it arrives late and there is toss all you can do about it cos the dealers got yer money.

4 The whole thing is a scam and you loose the lot

Try fighting that lot in a European court

I want to see it before I hand over my money

Your thoughts Please

use a trusted importer like litchfield or keyring-cars.

it seems to me the question should not be whether to get a euro or UK, but whether to get a euro or a JDM (twin scroll turbo!).

I have just ordered through Litchfield Imports and my deposit went to the dealer in Belgium, not the broker. My contract is with the Belguim dealer/Subaru Benelux, so if broker goes bust I still have a car with the dealer in Belguim, just a headache on how to get it.

Hope this helps a bit.

Question

You going to take £22k to a UK dealer in cash so that you can drive away there and then? If you pay by cheque or draft or whatever then you will have to wait while that clears and all the above apply.

Do you get out of your car while it is serviced? If so you are "trusting anyone with 16k of my money". What if they crash on a test drive?

In Euro land you are no worse off with a Belgian dealer than a UK dealer, they all answer to Subaru ultimately.

Mallock_Racer,

I think most operate on this kind of procedure (Eurakar does) which gives you some level of safety for the 6 month (or whatever) period of time between deposit and delivery. Unfortunately it doesn't help one bit when the final payment is due.

As mentioned, as long as you use reputable importers - check on here to find who others have used - there's less likely to be a problem.

I didn't want to pay 5K more for that peace of mind.

Use Iain Litchfiled at Litchfield imports. Your money would be very safe!!!!! Iain Is a genuine Nice Guy and I would have absolutely NO hesitation in telling you to go there, may not be the absolute cheapest but I can assure you he will be the best. Trust!!! Remeber I am a Scotsman and I trust him LOl seriously though he really is a top rate guy who knows how to look after his customers, rare in this day and age. give him a call all it will cost is the phone call you might even get a pleasant surprise.. Cheers

Is there any other way to buy an import, like trade-sales of slough

where you can go heres the money for the import model, I will take the car now that I have seen it Than You.

I can't believe that you are all putting up 16k + and trusting it all works out for the best.

But I do understand the points raised on this thread, its just its my cash, foreign lands and extended times with nothin to show for it that’s part of the worry formula.

styx,

You don't put the money up all at once Its as follows :-

Deposit to Subaru dealer - £1250.00 approx
Balance on arrival at Subaru dealer - £11,570.00 approx
VAT - £2250.00 approx

Then there's delivery, tax, reg, plates, brokers fee etc

On paying the balance, you have the option to take a bankers draft over to the dealer and collect the car yourself to make sure its in working order.

Insure the car on the chassis number, and usually the dealer will be happy to driver you and your car to the port on their insurance. Once off the ferry, insurance applies and you drive the car home on your temporary transit plates and wait for registration.....happy dayz

No I haven't orederd one and will not be doing so. £6k (which is what it will cost due to depreciation) to get some new headlights and an ugly scoop, I think not! I actually prefer the look of the MY01/02 WRX in silver (which is what I have) than the revised version. My opinion, and that is what counts as it is my car!

Thanks frisby fo the advice

Just be round to my bank, they said it all comes down to trust with an importer.

you risk 15K + and hope all goes well

or

they advise cash on delivey or bankers draft when you pick it up
less chance of it all going horribly wrong.

anybody know od a subaru garage near to a port who if frendly?
