gtb - you are on my wave length
upgraded to my scoob from four years of happy missioning in my old pug 1.6 gti.
i love that car like a member of my family. so i thought iwould treat it and have located an Mi16 engine! beauty!
they are such good fun - redline them for maximum enjoyment - and keep it above 4 grand and the smile will grow and grow. chuckable i think is the word i am looking for

I take it your commute isn't an hour down the M6 then?
As for your "sell it someone who appreciates it" you clearly don't get it. I love my Scoob, but I'm questioning whether the high running costs can be justified.
I've never had a sensible car yet, so I probably won't start now. I'll probably wait until it's back on the road before I make my final decision
Is definition of enthusiast "has bottomless pockets" or "is unaffected by economics"? I don't think so.

funny this comes up, Ive been doing the sums a bit too.
This year I reckon:
£400 tyres
Approx £700 servicing (2 services and pads0
£1500 quid insurance
£2700 petrol
£150 tax(well same as any car, but still there)
==£454 quid a month!!! ouch plus 300 quid a month I owe on it every month = a £750 a month car. Thats just under half my salary(I have a crap job ). Ofcourse I then have to live, this leaves me fck all!
But am I complaining, erm no. I knew it wouldnt be cheap! But I am well aware that this is really a mega amount of money to spend on a car!
The thing is, most of this is a commute!
Am moving jobs in a few months, less miles, less petrol, more pay. Should balance out the difference!

I was refering to the N/A when i said about sprint times. Anyway, its not the power u have its the power u put down. Put your chipped (if it such a good mod why didnt Toyota do it, nay sell a turbo officially in the UK) rear wheel drive up against an impreza with the same power in the wet.
Theres countless reviews around that say the turbo is a very jittery car to drive and the best one to get is the non turbo.

And i dont seriously believe that mr2s can quite happily beat an sti or a P1 on a dry twisty road or a motorway for that matter.
I'd like a scooby, but the cost is too high for me - I'll stick with my (261rwhp) MR2 and 205 1.9

No the arguement i had was somebody stated that an mr2 was a high performance car, THEN mentioned a turbo, impying that a non turbo mr2 was a high performance car. It still is a different class. Based on your logic why not go and get a wrx for £6500,still be quicker. In any case, i dont want a cheaper option otherwise id be rolling about in a ford ka.
BTW find me 15 grand P1 in good nick and ill have a dozen. if i wanted a mr2 with dubious handling and power and a boot no bigger than a handbag (which i suspect is whats normally carried in there male or female driver) id have one with enough money left over to keep me in old spice and chest wigs for the rest of my life. (which wouldnt be long if i drove in the wet much)
And on a final note, i have visited www.imoc.co.uk and found it to be a very poor website, if i were u id spend more time on your own web site improving it before charging on here with mr2 grandeur attitudes.
Ps. you mention standard P1 figures, wheres the same for an mr2

I think you hit the nail with that mate (Its what i was trying to say LOL)
I was never unimpressed with the ability of my scoob, and can honestly say it was far better than me, my first fast car that I saved up for a long time to get.
BUT after the novelty of speed wore off a found that the car rarely excited me, as to not pushing hard enough, I would say that if your pushing a scoob hard enough for it to be exciting on uk roads, your driving a little to fast (be honest you’ll probably agree with me and its why so many of us enjoy track days)
The price thing is more relevant to the cars performance (something I never doubted, I just said it was dull, not slow) its very expensive to run , I don’t need to tell you this.
My westy costs a fraction to insure sub 500 quid, my scoob a nice 2000 quid, servicing costs are about 30-40 quid on my car and the brakes and tyres last far far longer.
I can have more fun in the westy at safer speeds, driving along country lanes at 60 mph as exhilarating and feels also more energetic doing the same in the scoob, we both know that both cars could quite happily go faster, BUT… my point is that 60mph in a scoob, a highly competent car is …… um … dull, air con on, music, nice seats wife to chat with, and so on.
Im not keen on speeding on roads (love a safe blast through lanes but never race on roads) I get to open it up on track, and love the learning curve of the wety, I honestly believe the westy is a harder car to drive fast then the scoob, but it suits me as I like the learning curve

I'm seriously doubting my Scoob ownerhip this morning. It hasn't been on the road since August and to get it back together/legal will cost:
£360 tyres
£30 MOT
£160 Tax
£500 tracker
£2000 insurance
£3050 Total
And then £320 per month on petrol.
So thats £6890 minimum to run the thing for a year. I must need my bloody head read.

Look at the positive side.
If you sell the Scooby you're not going to save that much and you're definitely not going to have as much fun are you?

Ok, so let's say you trade for a five year old 1.6 Astra. You're gonna save on insurance and the tracker but not much else really. Tyres probably around 50% and petrol about another 10mpg.
But you'll always be glum in the knowledge that you've come down so far!!
Stick with it.

Carl - I'd thought about it but the factors which put me off include space for 2 cars and the fact it still means a 7hr round trip some days desperately looking for a houseshare somewhere closer..

Your not going to have as much fun if you sell the scoob? LOL
sell it man, get a cheep run around and a westy and have mroe fun than the scoob could ever offer, and save money and have cheepr insurence and not worry about parking the scoob places, this is what i have done, and dont regret it at all even with the bad weather
Ace cars scoobs are, fun they are not (in fact id say its posativly dull compaird to a caterham or wetsy)

are there any high performance cars that are cheap to run????
if there is i'd love to know wot cos i'd have one.
my escort RS used 2 cost me fortunes, where do u stop throwing money at it when there is so much to do to em.
wheels brakes styling etc etc the list never stops and the more u do to it the more it lets u down.
and the worst thing is that u can spend £10k on it but u wont get any of that back when selling it

I hear you crush, i mainly commute in mine, I often sit there thinking ' i only filled you up 2 f***ing days ago and your empty again, you thirsty ******* '
but the thought of selling makes me wonder why I go to work.
To be fair I dont own a house or owe on the car, this time next year......
Richard : Your journey sucks m8, worst bit is I live .5 mile from you. If any of my mates need a flatmate I'll have you at the front of my mind.....
Regards,
Andyp

Are there any high performance cars which are cheap to run?
Yep, mine
94 MR2, 180bhp, great fun.
Costs me about £380 a month for everything, fuel, insurance, loan the lot.
Tyres can be had for £60 a piece, just had service at £80, never breaks down, insurance is £600, returns 45mpg on Mway, 30mpg when really hammering it.
Notorious - get yourself an MR2 - you wont regret it
