Question

After reading through links regarding mechnical immobilisers I had decided to get a Mul-T-Lock gear shift immobiliser.

After enquiring at my local Halfords garage about getting one fitted - only one person in the building had a vague idea of what it did, how it worked etc. And after about 15 minutes actually put me off the idea of getting one installed.

The main point that stuck in my mind was that he said the device would protrude quite a lot into the passenger area and would not allow the seat to be moved.

Should I still get one installed? Or should I opt for the DiskLock Steering Wheel Cover which is half the price?

Scrappy,

I am getting the Barrier Deadlock fitted at the dealer for my new car. It's Thatcham approved and is drilled into the gearbox providing a key barrel on the drivers side of the transmission tunnel. Put it in reverse and push the barrel in to lock.

I would certainly recommend you investigate this - I will get a list of dealers that are now doing it, but I can think of Carstins and Bell & Colwill off the top of my head.

Fitted it's around £240.

I was also planning on getting a disklok as the Deadlock isn't an immediately obvious deterrent.

Hope this helps as I don't know what a Mul-T-Lock is I'm afraid.

Dave.

Does it have to lock in reverse ? I park my car front in as it is a 5 door so looks like any other car in the darkness of my drive.

From the documents I have seen it has to be reverse.

I can enquire with my dealer though, will be seeing him tomorrow / Wednesday so will ask then.

Scrappy,

I have a Barrier Deadlock -

-top bit of kit
-v. discreet
-locks vehicle in reverse only
-only small key hole visible in transmission tunnel when locked
-small brass lock shaft protruding 2 inches into passenger footwell when unlocked
-fitted by Wilsons Subaru,Chadwell Heath, Essex

Disklock is good as well - well rated deterrent I understand. (Also part of my arsenal.)

Talking

Great..

I’m on to my dealer today (SGT) to see if they can fit the Barrier Deadlock. Also going to get a Diskloc just for extra peace of mind (call me paranoid... but I am)

RayT

I can be precise here as I hoard bills.

£153 for the kit
£72 for labour
£39.38 for the vatman
£264.38 Total

Not really a while you wait - took half a day to get the Scoob back.

Would you want to watch somebody drill a hole in your prized possession?
