Glad you're OK.
Black Ice eh? Could you not sense there was some about? I usually do get that kind of feedback from the controls but mainly from the car's attitude through the seat of my pants. Impossible to describe but I'm sure many drivers will know what I mean.
With greasy or icy roads about lately, it surprises me how some folks still press on as if it were just another summer's day. I'm certain that cushioned within that cocoon which is now most modern cars, drivers are just not getting the feedback necessary to make them ease off sufficiently .... until they get FEEDBACK IN SPADES by which time it's far too late. Saw someone in a late BM* pressing on and then into all kinds of trouble entering a roundabout. Did he really just HAVE TO get by me? No control, fate taking over, he was lucky and only kerbed his expensive alloys on one side. On the same roundabout next morning, someone had gone straight over the kerb onto the grass. Between the deep tyre marks, there was a wide three metre long oil stain on the grass where the sump had been ripped off by the kerb. Bet he put "Black Ice" in answer to the claim form question: Who do you think was responsible for the accident?

What you saying MGJohn?, sounds like "Its all your fault pramrace, couldn't you tell there was a sheet of ice from a burst pipe round the next corner by the tingling in your trousers" or words to that effect! Sorry not really trying to have a go but it seems a little insensitive to post advice like that here, the guys down enough already.
Luck or lack of it in this case is more the point here,IMHO I think sympathy rather than critisism however constructive is required here.
Sorry to hear of your prang M8, hope alls OK and you get it fixed soon.

Richard,I'm not going to post again as this is all pretty pointless but does not a quote such as-
"Black Ice eh? Could you not sense there was some about?"
Followed by comments (alright, out of context) such as-
"Bet he put "Black Ice" in answer to the claim form question: Who do you think was responsible for the accident?"
indicate critism, it would to me

All scoobynetters ..... how could I directly point a finger of blame here as no real circumstances were indicated. So down to the individual to place whichever interpretation on my comments they chose. But, there is some good advice there.
My evidence is the finest available that of my own ears and eyes. In a former life, I worked in the claims department of the then largest UK motor insurance company dealing with many claims. Whenever there was a cold snap, the claim forms would come skidding in ..... nobody ever skidded on white ice apparently. And people wonder why their insurance premiums are always on the increase, irrespective of their individual claim history. Sure luck can and does play some part, but, ultimately, it's the nut holding the steering wheel which should be the most effective safety device ever invented ........

Firstly what sort of a thread starter is this?
'Black ice smashed up hit wall F**K'
there's no way anyone can tell exactly what happened. He's said just 6 words and everyone's saying sry m8 etc?????? For all we know the front bumper has been grazed??
Secondly why is MGJohn assuming he's speeding and hit black ice?
Anyone whose slid on the stuff knows there's not alot you can do about it except slide. So stop patronising the guy John.

Good Grief ....
I repeat: "So down to the individual to place whichever interpretation on my comments they chose."
Must remember look up what sancti-wossname means ...
Happy Safe motoring ... and watch out for any icy conditions .... any colour to be avoided .........

BTW. A reminder: Icy conditions much more likely during the colder winter months.
I mention this because my observations (see above) on fellow road users during very recent cold spells suggest that "Not a lot of people know that" ...
I kid you not!
