Used to have a 97 normal turbo imprezza. Been riding a GSXR 1000 the last 18 months but an addition to my family means i need a big safe estate (with some attitude). Would be grateful for your knowledge /experiences. How does it compare with the prezza does 280bhp compensate for the increased weight how does it handle? What should i look out for on a used model? Thank you in advance.

I've just bought a '98 model.
White estate in manual (=280bhp!!)
Performance is awsome.........nice & steady at low revs, but hit the load pedal & the 2nd turbo kicks in around 4000 - 4500 revs, and everything gets blurred very quickly.
'99 model will be newer to mine, better interior & more toys.
Auto model has only 260bhp, but manuals are harder to come by.
Handles like a dream, car will be heavier than Impreza, but loads of room for the kids & golf clubs.
Dremel.

Its much bigger than the Impreza on the inside but doesn't feel that way to drive - its very agile. Surprisingly not much heavier than the newage Impreza, in fact my '97 GT estate is actually lighter than a newage 4 door! Doesn't have the strong mid-range of the Impreza, because of the boost-dip during the secondary spool-up, but very strong top-end. You have to adapt your driving style to suit the twin-turbo setup, but thats not difficult. Softer sprung and more comfortable than the Impreza but still 'sporting' and very sure footed.
Bad points:
somewhat under-braked,
can be difficult to find anyone knowledgable if anything goes wrong with the twin-turbo setup,
insurance on GT-B is steep (older GT is much cheeper),
not as refined as RS6,
thirsty (about 4 mdg worse than UK Impreza)
Good points:
almost the ultimate Q car (old UK Legacy Turbo estate has to be the ultimate Q car :-) ),
doesn't attract unwelcome attention (polis, thieves etc) of the Impreza,
very surprisingly fast & nimble,
terrific road-holding & traction,
loads of space,
bigger than RS2, S4, RS4, faster than S6, a lot cheaper than RS6.
Its a brilliant all-round car!
