Question

Im a new guy to the site, and firstly I have to say it seems a good place to visit!

Anyway, the point of the post....
Well, I am looking to buy a new car in the next month or so, and a Subaru is pretty high on the list, but everyone keeps greetin on at me about how it will cost a mint to run.
Yes, I drive 80 miles a day to and from work, and yes I drive those 80 miles pretty fast, so, honestly, are the running costs as bad as people make out?

My current car is a 96 Calibra V6, and everyone told me this would cost a mint to run too, but frankly it hasnt been bad at all.
Ok, Insurance is a stinger, but short of a sex-change op, there isnt much I can do about that, and ive got some decent quotes for a WRX compared to what I pay now on the Calibra.

What kind of mpg can be expected from a Subaru on a motorway run at 80? what about round-town mpg?

What about maintenance? Service intervals are what, 7k miles? Bear in mind I will be doing all my own servicing, repairs and maintenance so the only costs to me will be parts. Are the parts themselves expensive? stuff like plugs, filters etc etc? what about the bigger stuff like discs and pads, clutch parts etc?
What about a timing belt? Everyone said "Oh no you cand DIY it on your V6, you need specialist tools, vaux training etc etc"
2 hours later it was done! Is the belt feasable for DIY on a subaru?
Is there a Haynes manual or similar available?
What about the transmission? one of the reasons I got a V6 rather than a turbo calibra was the need to rotate the wheels every few thousand miles to avoid transfer-box troubles. the 4x4 system on these cars can be rather fragile.
I presume there are no such problems with a scooby?

Any other nasty bills I am likely to come across during ownership?

Jeez, check the lenght of this post! sorry!
One last question - Anyone in the wilds on N.E. Scotland ever had any dealings with Brian Downie Car Sales in Kemnay?

Thanks for any help,
Dave.

I wouldnt recommend doing your own cambelt but a bloke i know reckons he can do em in 30-45 mins ?
I bought some cheap discs after breaking one in half cost about £60 a pair but dealers ask around £100 each, pads were around £22 - £40 front and rear
Also had centre diff replaced due to having different size tyres front and rear (waiting for fronts to wear before changing)

ripped off from a tony burns post (sorry toney but i couldnt be arsed typing it again)

Here is a brief outlook on your services

1 Year
7.5k one, cheap, 100 quid approx
15k one, cheap, around the same price as above

2 Year
22.5k one, cheap, around 100 quid again,
30k one, not cheap, around 300 quid from a speciallist, could be upto 400 from a dealer.

3 Year
37.5k, cheap one! (cost me 84 quid from a dealer)
45k, Biggy! look at spending upto 500 quid on this one, belt changes

4 Year
52.5k, cheap one!
60k as 30k service at yr 2 (expensive at around 300+ quid)

5 Year as 1 year

6 Year, even more expensive than the 3 year, seriously big service as its a 30k plus a 45k service, its over 500 quid from a dealer, speciallist will be cheaper.

Now none of these take into considerations brake discs, pads, and other consumable items, tyres for a good set (wheel size dependant) will cost say, around 90 quid for something your car needs to stop on and not something that will put you though a hedge. <end of TBs post>

And as for MPG hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

SUL only (in the majority of cars) at about 25mpg , less if u hav a heavy right foot.

Other than that for the money there aint nuthin like em

hope this helps

cheers

big sinky

Talking

They are not a hard car to work on and if you know what you are doing under a bonnet which by your post i would guess you do then no problem to service yourself....
