Please don't move this to another area because it probably won't get the response it deserves. At least leave it for a couple of days
Just been looking at insuring my Scoob as the renewal is just around the corner and having run round the ususal companies that have been recommended on this forum I have found the following and am concerned about what I read.
I have seen many boasts from younger, similar aged & less experienced drivers than myself claimimg that certain insurance companies are insuring there cars cheaply.
I am 36 and have been down similar routes with insurance and being honest about spec's mods etc with them, I haven't find them that competitve and usually find they are in a similar ball part to the rest especially when you compare what you get for your money.
A lot of these companies have very high excess charges, insist that it is garagred every single night of the week regardless of circumstance, loaded premium for mods, give you reduced legal fee (Which can be very important if you get in trouble), won't entertain any points, any certainly won't allow any substantial claims in the last 5 years.
I have struggled to get a quote of any substance for less than 1,000 pounds with reasonable excess, NCB's, legal cover, european cover etc
So if anyone wants to get in the 'It only cost this much' then please state the whole truth and nothing but the truth m'lord and realise that the cover your getting may not give you the cover that you need.
Read the small print and don't skimp especially if like me you change your car every couple of years. The last thing I want to do is spend 25K plus and find the insurance worthless.
Remember if you spread the payments over 12 months it doesn't always look as bad.
After all like me you will have worked long hard hours for your Scoob + mods
Comments would be welcome and I am not saying that everyone can't get cheap, good quality insurance. But it seems very rare to me

Standard UK MY00 turbo, no mods, 30yr old, IT engineer, parked on driveway, full NCB, £400 excess, tracker monitor, cat1 alarm, no points, no accidents in past 5 yrs. £500ish per year. Just changed cars recently so I can't be exact, but it's definitely in that region.
Nissan 200SX touring (grp 17 also) £850, £400 excess
Honda S2000 (grp 20) £950, £500 excess due to soft top.
All these figures are with Directline.
I live in a fairly rural area, and this can make quite a big difference.

Read the insurance forum.
What I am saying if you read the thread is there are some so called unbelieveable quotes going round for drivers younger or less experienced etc

I believe I got quite a good deal on my insurance, i'm suprised you're paying over £1000. Do you live in London/Brum/Manc ?
28yrs old
2claims in last year (one a total loss @ £24500)
5points
Lots of mods on an MY01 WRX (kept on driveway)
£980 fully comp, minimum excess and adequate legal cover.
Saying that, I've heard a few bad reports on Norwich Union when it comes to claiming, let's hope I never find out!

Your seems more genuine. I was offered similar by LV, £895 + Mods 400 excess, but still not convinced about there clauses ? and on 25K car I want to be absolutely sure that if I need to claim I will get the money quickley and efficiently and without masses of letters and phone calls, whiich is what I have now

Cheers Paul
But again you have doubts. I am paying £1062 but with only £100 execess, plus can park anywhere, any mods so long as I write and tell them (No extra Charge), free window replacement + when I did claim around 9 years ago for a stereo the replacement was fitted within 48 hours and no question as to the make model etc.
And although there was excess to pay on this, they waved it as this has and only has been my only claim in 16 years (Touch wood).
So as I have said you gets what ya pays for

I have a standard UK car (bar colour coding and driving lamps that I'm told don't matter) I'm 24 (Was 23 when I took the policy out.) with 3 years NCB. I paid the £1000 in one lump. The excess was only £100 (but that was a special offer)
I have not beaten that quote and I have told the truth. I do live in the middle of nowhere though.
It seems that it isn't as easy to get insurance this year. I've got a few quotes from places for when my renewal comes up, and I'm not impressed.

The first insurance I had in my own name was the free insurance that came with my VTS. I had a group 14 car and would be 23 with only 1 year no claims bonus so I saved like mad for the renewal after the free year. The company phoned up and told me they would give me a 6 years no claims bonus with the option to protect and I obviously took it. The renewal for the VTS was £1k less than I'd saved for
During my second year I upgraded to the scooby and declared my mods!! Today I phoned for my renewal which is due at the end of the month.....£1178.10 Not bad IMO, given that I'm still under 25 with a modified UK and have only had 2 years insured claim free. This cover however includes my business miles (which puts most quotes through the roof) and has AJ on it with her SP60.
The catch!! Well, there doesn't really seem to be one other than the fact that my excess is £750 due to my age.

Phil,
You haven't said who you insure with ??
I still say that reading the small print properly will unearth a few worms.
I can get very cheap insurance but am concerned at the level of cover that you actually get for ya money ?
It seems that any of the detail from other companies does not fully address any of my concerns whereas the company I am with currently does down to the nth ? and as I have said if you are spending 25K on a car then skimping on cover isn't the clever thing to do. Not that I'm saying that your cover does.
What I will do is post what I belive to be an ideal level of cover based on my policy etc and just see how many others give same/similar level.
Its a very difficult subject to discuss accuratley, but at 36 I have read enough legally binding contracts at work to last me a lifetime so am used to looking at the detail
See you at the ball !
Enjoyed meeting you et all at the priory last Sunday

I was about to say be thankfull you don't live in Northern Ireland but bigsinky got there first and spoiled my moan!
28 full NCB and clean licence £1500!
Presumably the value in cars/age comes into play here even though my MY01 will soon be worth as much as his 95!

Yeh - My figure is lowish (£600) (£250 excess) also for MY97 no mods. Both myself & wife covered, no tracker but Cat 1 & garaged.
Live in the highlands, 44yrs old but only 2 years no claims. Last year before I had a bump was £475.
Postcode & age seem to be the thing. Oh and Norwich Union by the way.

Hi Steve
I am 36, clean licence, live west of london (just within M25).
Insured with Greenlight
Fully comp/proctected
8+ years NCB
£300 excess
Insist on Cat1 and Tracker
Insured for Me and Wife
Scooby my00 with PPP (declared)
Quote £756.
Taken additional "Angel assistance" for extra £17.50, to cover "legal expenses in respect of uninsured losses, out of pocket expenses and non-fault claims management.
Also "green card" (european cover, basic) included at no extra charge.
Not a bad deal I thought.

While we're on this suject ,how much discretion have insurers got on payouts ie if you were speeding or such like can they say "tough luck sunshine" and not pay out,i always got the impression that if big bucks were involved they can be really strict?

Tesco require a tracker system, just something to take into account if you dont have one fitted. They werent too bad for me about £1500 with all the mods.
#26
JDM STi V2 wagon, totally standard.
55 years, software engineer, no accidents, 5 points.
Living in rural Somerset.
£550 FC with Adrian Flux, £350 excess
The legal cover was another £32 but I always refuse that on principle (never needed it in 32 years of motoring, seven on bikes).
They did NOT require a tracker, almost all the other quotes did, and all were higher.

28, MY00, exhaust mod - full decat, 6ncb, sp30, car kept in private parking off road, £812 - £300xs Greenlight, I live in the essex area, £20 odd for legal cover, has cat 1, Tracker Monitor, previously driven fast car for 7years. Think this may of helped. IT Proffesional. If more mods added to let them know, and they work the increase on performance increase of engine/bhp. Best deal IMHO, Tescos quoted me 1015.00 required tracker. I had tracker fitted cos i wanted to.

What reason have people got to lie?
29, FC, full NCB, protected, business class 1 use, postcode falls into weighting 13 out of 30 (I think), wife to drive, garaged, immobilised, tracked, modified exhaust, filter, lamps. 350 xs IIRC.
Under 800 quid with Adrian Flux which is 50 quid less than last year (again with Adrian Flux). no BS. Was about half of some of the other places. Underwritten by royal and sun alliance.
Car must be garaged when at home, but that's fine with me. I know people with two cars and a single garage who claim that both cars are in the garage for insurance purposes. It's fraud, deception, whatever, and it's pushing up the cost of insurance for everyone else...
Nick.

Most of you are being conned!
93 WRX Import + 23 year old named drived (me) insured under policy holder 52 yrs old (my dad) + 5 years NCD + small excess + fully comp + ATS Euromaster = £700
Ok so I'm insured thru my dad, but I pay a pittance for insurance!
