Advice on buying second hand scooby
#1
Hi folks, first post from a lurker!
It's looking like a small dream of mine will come true within the next 6 months or so - i.e. me buying an impreza.
Just wondering if there is any advice that anyone can give - stuff to look for / avoid / must haves / reliability etc?
I'm looking to get something like an S or T reg UK turbo model, but haven't decided exactly what to go for yet.
Any advice for a novice?
Thanks,
Mentat

Depends whether you want standard, modded, import, Sti, PPP'd
You have to be a bit clearer on the spec your looking for
There are some good cars to be had at the moment especially as the new model is launched soon. You may get more for your money than you realise if you hang on a few months like you suggest

um, well i'm not entirely sure what spec i want, but i'll probably go for a standard uk spec for insurance purposes. It's still going to be flaming quick compared to my current car.
Maybe consider modding it in the future, but not right away.
Thinking of just a standard uk 2.0 turbo to start with, but i'm open for suggestions.
Unfortunately insurance is likely to be the main factor in what spec i get.

Make sure there's a decent service history and do an HPI check to make sure it hasn't seen any lamp posts at close range
Look around a bit as well, as one person's "good condition" is another's "fair condition".
In the main Scooby are reliable and are quite easy to work on if you are into that sort of thing... (not everyone's cup of tea though)

Have you looked here?

Personally, I'd go for the newest I could afford. Whats your budget?
In terms of reliability, I've had UK/EU Scoobs since '97 and the only thing that has gone wrong is the rewind button on the radio cassette
