Just had my first friendly chat with the police...

Suprised it took this long actually
You know me, I post the good and the bad so here goes <zip > There is a 60mph straight road near my house and often I have a 'last blast' up to the roundabout, swing round and put her to bed. Tonight following on from an SCC thread I was wanting to test my speedo 30-70 time (5.1s btw - granted mega inaccurate) so off I set. Cops obviously saw me do this and pulled me in as I went round the roundabout. They were a little pissy at first and asked how fast I went? I said 70mph. He said, 'Eye fooking right' It was on the tip of my tonque to say how I knew for sure I was going 70 (which is actually 65 on the road (hence speeding by 5mph)) but I could tell I was just going to get a warning and proving my point would just set them on a mission to find something with the car...not hard...no cats
Anyways, they checked out mine and the cars details thoroughly and we chatted away about the usual stuff, how fast is it, how much to insure, how much did it cost, etc.
But..... They told me that A LOT of Impreza's are being stolen in the Edinburgh area and that I'll need to be extra careful. Apparently even more are being nicked in Glasgow and often for organised crime jobs in Edinburgh Let it be a warning to us all to be extra careful peeps.
Slap on the wrist taking and thank **** I wasn't doing my normal pre-bedtime run where I usually go a little over 70mph

I think that you will hear the same for any other inner city. B'ham is quite ad too. Rumour has it that if you had a B at the eginning of your post code (for B'ham) that a lot of insurance co.s will not insure it.

Well,i really feel for you guys that live in citys,i don't feel particularly safe where i live and it's only a sleepy 'backwater'type town. How come these crims' aren't bieng caught as i thought most scoobys have trackers or are the crims' sourcing these cars through the trader mags? Surely full scooby tracker coverage is the way to go but that aint gonna be easy to arrange
ps for some alarms/cars with c/l you can get a module that will lock your doors a few secs after the engine is running just to even some of the odds a little. (echo Saxo Boy 'be carefull')

SB that bit of road you refer too wouldn't be between a casino and a hotel with a roadabout in between?
If so remember that the Lothian Police use the turnhouse road as their measured mile for speedo calibration thus there tends to be quite a lot of traffic cars slong that road.
I found this out the hardway whilst overtaking a car on the turnhouse road at a little more than 60mph...
As for the cars getting nicked well mine is still there - just checked!!

Dunno about trackers either, a well known (RR 350bhp, owned by well known scoobie tuner here). Scoobie was nicked from a small country town here in ireland recently, fitted with tracker etc Now nowhere to be found, tracking company reckon its either in an underground carpark or metal container, they initiated some sort of GPS sweep, which meant the car only had to see daylight for a min or two to be picked up, but no luck yet, and there have been reports that its been used in a robbery already...
nice deterent for a joyrider, still reckon the more persistent types will get round this, they even diconnected his CCtv camera watching the car!
Cheers

Whats really getting to me this morning is that I usually have very good 'police' awareness and yet I have no idea where they were sitting! I waited till I was well into the 60mph zone before booting it. I suspect they must have been in the flats development to the left just after the Casino. They probably got suspisious when I crawled past at 15mph with a moblie in one hand
I see the point about trackers. Great as there are it means you'll get your car back if stolen which can often be a bad thing. Its not easy for someone to buy that car at a reasonable price with confidence cause they will always wonder what happened to it when the neds had it

*Ahem* Are you to quite finished? Pot & Kettle my ****! AJ, unlike myself, doesn't understand the concept of other drivers and safe braking distances ..........and she's training to be a driving instructor God help us all!

saxo, dont mean to call you stupid, but you should never ever admit to doing anything over the speed limit, nomatter how friendly they.
I would have said you were wondering how fast you could do 30 to 60, and made sure it was safe to do so without risking anyone or anything.
regardless, you did not go over 60 mph. innaccuracies or not.

I see your point and if I'd been going faster...say 100mph I wouldn't have said that cause they could have used that in evidence against me. However, in my case I would have been quite safe IMO to admit to doing a speedo indicated 70 on a 60 road. The reason for this is that I know how much my speed is out and when it shows 70mph I'm actually doing about 64-5mph and for this reason they would have a very difficult time doing me for speeding or dangrous driving. Under the circumstances I felt being open and forthcomming with them was the best policy as they could have easily found several things about the car to do me for if I'd pissed them off! I think admitting to any form of timed runs would have put me in more trouble as they could have presented a good cause that I couldn't drive safely and opperate a stopwatch at the same time, they'd probably be right
I see your point though adam

Lets take an extreme example to try to get my point accross! Lets say a women () with zero understanding of how cars works floors a high power FWD in a straight line in icey conditions and the wheels spin to show 60mph on the speedo. The cops believe she may have exceeded 30mph but not by much and she 'admits' to doing 60 cause she's dumb and actually thinks she was! How could they prosecute her when she clearly wasn't going that fast!
I told the police I was doing 70mph! If they had made a thing of it I could prove I was doing consideraby less than that and within the usually applied tollerance zone (if we can call it that).
Can any legal eagles clarify?
