World record donations?
#1
WTF is happening with this? Just looked in 'Scoobyaid' and there was a post from Nov 2001 saying the account should be set up in the next few weeks
If I'd known I wasn't going to have to pay, I would have pledged a couple of grand and got my company logo all down the side of the car
I'm going to give it till the end of the month, which IMHO is plenty of time, then donate it to the charity of my choice.

If you would like to organise the collection of the money, I'm sure everyone would be very grateful. It is fairly complicated and time consuming though.
Let me know, as I just don't have the spare time at present.
cheers

Why would I organize collection of the money? I didn't attempt a world record, nor did I ask for donations for charity. I don't have the time either.
What do you want me to do with the money? Keep it forever? I can't even remember how much it was -- it would seem to be a lot simpler if I just give it away now.
IIRC the publicity at the time said "broke the world record and raised £5,000 for charity" or the suchlike, when in reality we've raised F-all for charity. I'd be a lot happier if I just give the money to the NSPCC or whatever (I'll fill in a gift aid form), ask for a receipt and send it to you.

erm... I assume that's a no then?
No need to get so angry, it was a simple question as it seemed to be something you were very enthusiastic about.
It's not as though nothing has been done about it, it's just been a lot more complicated than originally anticipated.
Shaun, myself and Neil smalley have all tried to get things moving on it, but it's more complicated than a simple collection.
I do agree 100000% that it should have been done so far, but it just hasn't been as easy as you might assume.

Simon, would it be an idea if we personally just pic a charity (preferably online, like the Red Nose thing), donate the pledged money, and post up the "receipt" in the charity forum ?
We could all pick the same, or we each choose the one we like.
No extra work, and the money still gets where it should be.
Just trying to be practical.

I'm not saying it's easy, and I'm not saying I'm angry about it
What I am fed up with is not being able to fulfil my end of the bargain. I'm quite happy to do that off my own back, so that the money goes to where it's needed. I guess that everyone else is too. With lots of people making a small amount of effort, the result is achieved. I can't remember if we agreed to donate to one charity or several, but it seems to me the simplest method is:
1) Each person makes a donation to one of the agreed charities (let them choose which), making sure they've done the GiftAid thing
2) They get a receipt for their donation
3) They send the receipts to you, Shaun or whoever
4) Person receiving the receipts at (3) adds them up -- should make at least 80% of the total -- checks the names off against the original list, and chases the stragglers
Of course this relies heavily on the assumption that a charity will give you a receipt for a donation

OK, maybe I don't know the ins and outs.
But If I did a sponsored walk and asked people to give money, after the event I would go round and collect it, or rely on people sending it to me. Surely if the money was in one place, that would be a start.

One of the biggest issues is that of the tax issue.
We could collect money asis and forget about the tax rebate, but that would stop us getting a free £2000.
The other option is to try and collect the tax via giftaid into a single account. However this become very complex as no one is prepared to use their own account to store the money in, because if there were any mistakes or hiccups then that person would be in deep do do until it was sorted out.
Setting up a different account would require all kinds of legal stuff in order to ensure it was all above board. No bank we spoke to would allow us to set up a charity account without all kinds of hoops to go through.
Or we could rely on people to donate and fill in their own forms, but then how would we keep track of it all.
We asked for ideas a while back and nobody offered anything that could help us out.

Hi
It will take forever to explain all of the reasons why it's way more complex than you would assume (and they are reasons that most of us wouldn't think of - as most of us didn't), but they are things like... banks won't set up a seperate account for a charity unless YOU are the registered charity, if we take it all in to another account, it has to go through the books and costs money to administer, there was some kind of tax break that the government gave if the cheque was on e big cheque, so we moved away from the "everyone send money" approach - can't remember exactly what it was.
but the list went on and on, problem after problem.
carl. all seems like a good idea, but it take HUGE ammounts of time to a) contact everyone (some email addresses were NEVER valid, let alone STILL valid), b) count up the money c) chase everyone else.
If you have a nice easy solution to make all this work, we'll all be grateful, but there isn't one we've found so far.
If everyone wants to give the money to their own charity then I personally would think that would be fine. But again, that's not a decision I have been willing to make as it's not my money, it's the money of the people that were pledging thinking it would all go to one or a small number of charities in a big lump, so it could change the benefit of it significantly.
Suggestions are always welcome, but bursting out in an angry post with icons on your post without the bankground information as to the huge ammount of effort that people have put in to trying to get it sorted is not really going to move things forward.

Simon

Watchdog -- might be an idea if you read up on the history of this before making suggestions. There were reasons we didn't want to do that, one of which was that the Scoobynet populace voted to split the money amongst multiple charities (5 or 6, IIRC).

Another possibility, since I am offshore, the tax issue shouldn't be a problem. So, I could setup a bank account next week, and could take control of organising the collection of the donations.
But only if scoobynet community agree's.
Up to you.

Well the current solution seems to be 'do nothing'. Can't we just do what EvilBevel and I have suggested? Even if nobody fills in the GiftAid bit, the charities will get more than they'll get if we do nothing.
I looked at the NSPCC website 'Donation' screen, and you just check the GiftAid radio button, which seems pretty simple. I'm hoping the other nominated charities are just as simple.
BTW
Just the one actually: I thought it would get a bit more attention.
