The 1/4 Mile Question
#1
Has anyone out there know the 1/4 mile time of a standard MY97 UK Turbo?
Also, would it pass the line at 100mph?
How do other cars STI, P1, 22b etc. fair up (Standard!)
cheers

My MY00 does it in 12.72@110.6...(hit the limiter in 3rd, should've learned how to drive the car when I started modding - a 110 trap is a middle 12).
I've actually seen standard-ish turbos (modded with exhausts, and an open filter) do it in mid 13's....which is weird, a completely stock one would struggle to get below 14.

...one thing - the quarter mile is ALL about getting out of the "hole" - the first 60 feet. Then it's just a matter of flooring it and changing gears (swiftly).
You will have to leave mechanical sympathy home for this one.
I got a 1.7 60-feet by revving it to 6500 rpm, and almost dumped the ceramic paddle clutch (you want mild slippage, and no bogging down - never drop the clutch)...no wonder the gearbox recently resigned.
The quarter mile is not what this car is about - but it's alot of fun to try once - trackdriving however is another ballgame, a more entertaining one.
/J - with a stronger box on order...

not quite sure of the full spec of the car she hasnt had it long
its had the boost turned up to i think 14 or 15 psi.the rr showed 143 @ flywheel and 114 @ wheels

15.5 and 99mph don't match up IMO. She must have sat spinning at the line for ages I'm tempted to say....women
If it achieved a trap speed of 99mph then it should be able to do the 1/4 mile a fair bit quicker than 15.5. I've done a 15.3 @ 89mph in a VTS

Skid thats my whole point! With a trap speed of 99mph it should be spanking some scoobys let alone standard Saxo's. My whole point it the speed is very good but the time is crap! That means there must have been IMO excessive wheel spinning at the start which would waste time for little distance achieved. Then once power is down she halls *** and nails through at 99mph but with a crap time.
#11
To be spanking scoobys it would need to be doing around 13.5secs.Having run for 2 seconds less the terminal speed would be more like 85mph.Your right though it must have been wheelspin city off the stage lights.
Have you run your scooby yet-I'd be interested to see what it does with your mods.I reckon on 13.5secs at around 100mph.
STI7 with PPP 12secs?As in dead or in the 12secs?I'd have thought high 12s.

Planning to in the new 'thrash' year I'm hoping for 13-13.5 but I think the clutch is going to be the 'weakest link' I can't really launch it as it just gets overloaded and spins with the car sitting still
#13
In Dec 2001 I had a HKS clutch fitted to my GTiR.After carefully bedding it in for 500 miles it still slipped on 1.2bar-gutted.It cost me around £750 for the clutch and fitting and it feckin slipped. The gearbox went last June and I only managed to do around 2500-3000miles on it with only one 1/4 mile day...bargain.I still managed a 12.7 thougheven with it slipping on launch and through the gears, finally settling down in 4th.I've gone for an AP item this time with a stronger box and a few choice mods so mid-high 11secs should be possible.

Don't say that about the AP's.They're meant to be pretty good on Pulsars.
Saxoboy-not particularly, just 1.2bar on standard internals but that will be less soonand a short ratio box to go in-similar ratios to Type R's but doesn't rev as high(yet)so less actual speed per gear.I reckon I'd have been close to 11s last year if the clutch had stopped slipping.

Saxo Boy, the time & speed are about right for the 5 Turbo because unlike your Saxo which had a nice torquey motor with a linear power band the 5 has a small capacity low compression motor with a big turbo, which comes in like a lightswitch especially if it is running increased boost. Off the line he will have either bogged the car down, then had to wait until the revs & boost recovered, or he will have used large revs to keep the boost up & waited for the tyres to melt enough to get some grip. The terminal speed alone says that the car must be running impressive boost, the thing must have flown once it got a grip

Quite agree Crispy! I'd be interested to see what it could have done in the right hands (no offense to the driver). It certainly would run standard scoobys pretty close once rolling and boosting

My standard 97my turbo done the 1/4 mile at 14.4 secs and was doing around 94/95 mph.
This was with a 5000 rpm start and a reaction time of around 9 thou of a second, so there is room for improvment yet.I am sure Stef ued to get in the high 13s with his standard car but he was quite mad.

15.5secs, and 99mph do not tally up. If it only has 140bhp, then it isnt going to be spinning the wheels so badly, that the time is what it is, and if it only has 140bhp, then no way is it going to get 99mph at the end of the qtr.
My mini, which is still a 1293 turbo ( modified of course ), has done 14.5 ( with full tools and luggage on board ) at 102mph.
I would estimate over 180bhp, and that time is with serious wheelspin til nearly 80mph. ( 2nd gear still ) crossing the line in 3rd.
Perhaps if the car was lighter, and had slicks, and a diff, then I could get much better times and speeds.
I dont think shorter gearing would help either, as it spins the wheels too much anyway, so at least with my current gearing I get good top end.

As you asked what is possible over 1/4 miles, I'm currently working on a rather nice spreadsheet with formulars calulating some interesting 0-60 and 1/4 mile figures on ANY car, with comparisons to all types Scoobies too.
Here's some more pasted info, remember all are from my FORMULARS, the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are the two end figures. Comments?
NOTE: THESE ARE SLAUGHTERING THE CAR WITH NO SYMPATHY, AND THEY ARE THEORY FIGURES, ADD 0.5 SECONDS FOR MOST VEHICLES TAKING SLIGHT CARE.

The formular only requires outright BHP and the weight in KG, thats all! Oh and if its 4wd or not, thats it. No torque, gearatios etc, there are far more many complicated programs but keep it simple and its still not far off.
I am hoping to put the spreadsheet on the internet with 1000+ cars more cars. Hopefully hiding the formulars, and letting users play around with output figures and weight like I can at the moment. Good fun. Call me stato! Comments?

The formular only requires outright BHP and the weight in KG, thats all! Oh and if its 4wd or not, thats it. No torque, gearatios etc, there are far more many complicated programs but keep it simple and its still not far off.
I am hoping to put the spreadsheet on the internet with 1000+ cars more cars. Hopefully hiding the formulars, and letting users play around with output figures and weight like I can at the moment. Good fun. Call me stato! Comments?
Oh, and just to proove the formulars work with modified cars to I've added:
Escort RS Cosworth (Martin H) REYLAND old car 517bhp 517 1304 396 3.0 11.1
Skyline R33 ABBEY MOTORSPORT genuine 700bhp 700 1500 467 2.8 10.7
