just wandering how many have switched to scoobys from cossies and what is the +/- about them both.
I would certainly have a scooby if i ever left RS ownership(don't think i will though )
Dave.

I had a Sapphire (2WD) and my younger brother has a 3 door. I switched to a 306 Gti-6 and then to the Scoob (02 WRX) I would say there is little comparison between the Sapphire and the Scoob, apart from the shove when the turbo spins up the Scoob handles better, brakes better, is better screwed together. The only things I would say the Sapphire was better was the steering and tuneability (spelling?) Oh and of course sideways on demand! and fuel consumption was slightly better, and the Recaros...... quite a few things actually when I think about it!?

No, standard shocks with Koni lowering springs, just felt very "heavy" compared to the Subaru, plus of course the grip when moving off or exiting corners is far superior

i had a sapphire 4x4 cosworth before my p1 and the differences were, the cossie had better seats, heated front screen, tuneability and it didnt have a 60p ariel on the drivers door!!. but it wasnt as good a handler or as quick on acceleration obviously, and the styling was not as outrageous, still a great car though which gave me no trouble at all during the 2 and a bit years i owned it.

Just sold a 500+ bhp Sapph and was going to take a break from speed as i was stopped at 133mph but a friend of mine imported a "96" wagon which was in superb condition and at the right money so i thought i'd try it.
It's certainly good fun and compared to the Sapph it's safer due mainly to the lack of power,it changes direction far better than the Sapph ever could. The Sapphs brakes were in a different league though, managing to stop you instead of just slowing you down. Fuel consumption even favours the Sapph believe it or not.
To be honest though comparing these 2 cars isn't really possible as the Impreza dies at the point where the Sapph could still accelerate in top like it was in second gear. You could often see 170mph on the Sapph clock without it appearing to be dangerous, daft i know but it would reach it in such a short space of time.
Standard for standard I think you won't go far wrong if you want an Impreza although unlike the Cossies there is more choice than a Chinese restaurant so the decision on what model would be yours.
Reading the boards here it also appears the Impreza engine is rather fragile compared to the Cossie's, how true that is i no doubt will see.
The Touring car unit in the Impreza, now there's a thought!!

I had a saf cossie (290bhp), then a scoob(250bhp), then 3 door(220bhp), then scoob (300bhp)
.
Off the top of my head the advantages of the scoob were (imo):
-looks better
-better built
-more reliable
-owners (the ones who I met who were selling) were more sympathetic/caring to the car
-better image
-and 4wd grip as my cossies were rwd
-less lag
Cossie advantage:
-faster past 70mph, 3rd gear so much better
-rarer
-hold values better(?)
-performance bargain, nothing quicker for 3.5k
-obviously tune-ability
All in all I prefer Scoobs.

I had a 2wd saph and a 4wd saph before the scoob and i'd have another tommorrow.
Much more gruntier than the scoob, like somone said before you can't beat the top end, my 4wd seemed to accelerate harder at 140mph than the scoob does at 100mph, saw 160mph on the clock a few times, i've had a few jap cars (gti-r's, scoob) and they just can't cut it above 80mph.
Never had trouble with mine, and loved the leather recaros in the 4wd.
I bought a scooby because I'd heard they were bullet proof, so I thought i'd get one and crank it up... then I found this site and found out they aren't, gearboxes brake, the clutches go easily, turbo's are weedy, etc, etc...sound is good though, handling on the scoob is better and safer, traction is better too, even my 4wd cos would wheelspin power away in 2nd gear.
I am very dissapointed in the lack of tunability of the scoob and would love an escort cossie, but just can't afford it yet.

I had a scooby now i have a cossie much more fun with 2wd "back end out" than 4wd! But scoobs do have the ultimate handling! My scoob cost me 0000s in repairs cause parts are so dear but i have done 4k in the cossie and nothing has gone wrong at all! rumior has it that scoobs are more relieable than cossies but in my situation this is not the case. But i may of had a bad scoob and a good cossie so that could explain.

i'm not comparing only the uk ones, jap ones too.
Just asking previous cosworth owners what the differences are like with owning a uk/imported scooby.
I know the cossies are years old now and the scoobys are up to date with all the mod cons etc.....but they are bloody good cars in terms of cost to buy, tune and modify (engine wise) not like scoobys.
My mate has a 99 model and is a good car,but he wants an exhaust and he has been quoted for a good one £1000, how can anyone justify spending that on an exhaust, i paid £360 and that hurt me!
Do the previous cossie owners wish they had kept their car with tuning costing so much for the scoob compared to the cossie?
Dave.

I've currently got a 2wd cossie, but would love a P1....
I get fed up with the fact that my car is so unrefined, and everything in it is notcieably 15 years old.
Got use of a Pulsar GTiR (Dad's car), and my cossie will outbrake it, accelerate quicker in all gears on the move, but I get done off the line by a long way, and it outhandles mine by miles - shame really cos acceleration off the line and handling are about the only two things you can use on the road!

when you say about the exhausts, you can buy cheap ones for the scoob but the dear ones are HKS, Blitz etc and are much better made and better looking than mongoose or scorpion(usual cossie ones)
As far as do I wish I'd kept the cossie, no, I do miss it though, I miss the ease of working on, the tunability and the grunt(when modded), but I don't miss one eye on the temp gauge in traffic, oil consumption and handling.
My mate had a 2wd running 30psi, i remember the day we picked it up, we took his mum out for a spin and she didn't stop screaming at him, it was bloody quick!
I had a few scary moments in mine, like racing my mates R1 and doing 145mph on a road not really suitable(private road) lifted off to about 130mph for a slight bend and feeling the back go light made me slow down a bit!.

car i had before the sport was a RWD Sapphire Cossie with 350BHP. I loved it to bits, leather recaro trim, bags of torque, RWD, fantastic brakes, really nice chassis balance. It cost me a fortune to run though, i spent £7K in one year just keeping it on the road. I did use it a lot on road and track though.
Scoob isnt as raw, but as an alround package is better. It's just diferent, they are very diferent in the way they work.
I would happily have one again, maybe a proper escort cossie with 420BHP, they feel a bit dull with less power. My STi5 TypeRA is a better car and definately better balanced than an Escort Cossie though. The seats in an Escort/Saphire Cossie put the scoob to shame.
Cossies are great cars, So are scoobs.

J plate Sapphire with Mountune conversion for nearly 2 years, mostly in Germany. Only time I've ever had a car off the clock! Would out run any bike and surprised alot of Germans in their BMW's and Mercs. Cruising down to the 'ring at 150mph is a glorious thing!

Si,I'm here, i'll read the link.
On the reliability issue of a Cossie, i ran mine for 12 years with 500+hp with no problem at all and in the early days when taking it out on the track with the TVR Tuscans it ran 32psi.
As said above, they are both good fun cars but my Impreza wouldn't be worthy of comparison with my old Sapph.

Just one thing touched upon earlier is that at the money a Sapph is a performance bargain I personally cannot see any justification for paying big money for an Impreza, there isn't any real difference between a well modded classic and a new car except of course the age, the power is after all really what we want, the rest of the car in my opinion doesn't warrant paying upwards of 10k and for that money you can get a seriously quick Cossie.

Going quick is one thing but handling is another!
I thought my sapphire was good but the Impreza is in a different league! Sure, you can fork out for mods but that's thousands more! Oh, and if you think the Impreza interior is bad, look at a Sierra (did love the leather Recaro's though!!
The other downside to an older Sierra is that the crash performance is dire which is a major consideration when you have a family.

I suppose that the fact that it is getting old,and looks dated and certainly the safty factor in a new car, and of course what car do you want after owning a cossie.
If i ever got rid of mine (cos 4x4 330-350 )for a more modern car i would want something that when you drive it, it gives you a bloody big smile on your face, the way the cossie does.
To be honest there are only two cars capable of doing this: scoobys and lancer evo's,and being that i cannot afford an evo 6 then it would have to be a scoob.
Would it satisfy me,in standard form, and how much would it cost to get it to be near the same performance as the cossie, and then how reliably would it be.
Dave.

Got a Saph Cossie RWD (about 260-270bhp) but bought a Scoob just before Xmas, (standard UK). I was gonna sell the Cossie but decided to hold back for a bit. The Scoob, even though its only standard at the moment, doesn't give you the punch that the Cos does. Its obviously great on corners and off the lights etc but can I get that in a 4WD Saph for a lot less money?
I love Scoobs and I love Cossies but I'm probably not gonna bother spending money on engine upgrades for the Scoob until I get an STi in a couple of years.
Can't bear to sell the Cos though knowing that its quicker and I'll be losing a shedload of money on it (new engine last year), but I'm gonna get a nice exhaust on the Scoob for a start and see how it go's from there.
Icy.

Had a 370bhp Escort Cos with loads done to it. Bought a standard STi 5 and its quicker, it don't bounce round corners, it don't snap drive shafts/CV joints... Need I say anymore?
If I knew how I would link to a post I made a couple of weeks ago. Someone asked 'cossy v scooby'

I suppose it depends whether you are comparing the cossie with the UK scoobys or the Jap ones.
Performance wise, the STI Jap cars far exceed the cossie.
