Whats the best CD multiplayer
#1
Well thanks to the positive responses to my bike rack question I can now KEEP THE SCOOBY!! Thanks once again to all concerned.
To celebrate I'm going to put a 6-10 CD auto changer in. Any ideas as to whats the best to buy, I've got £200-300 to spend. Also, are the standard Scoob speakers ok or do these need beefing up?
Cheers

I've got a six disk Alpine CD with head unit and its pretty good but the standard speakers are a bit tinny and don't handle the bass too well. I'm not a real ICE fanatic though so haven't changed them. You can buy the Alpine CD from many places mail order within your budget and its a very good unit - installation is a DIY job too though you may need to have the Alpine head unit to go with it. Any one else know if this is the case?
I've found one of the cheapest places to buy electrical stuff is from the shops that advertise in the specialist mags - many seem to be based on the Tottenham Court Rd in London!
Good luck.

I've got an Alpine 6 disc unit too! Fits in the glove box, since if it were in the boot it would get tangled up with all the bike gear that I tend to lug around.
Again, I'm no ICE man - so I'm not sure what else is around. Panasonic changers look really neat, because the caddy doesn't use a separate carrier for the discs. They simply insert into the slots in the caddy.
Glad to hear the bike thangs sorted

PS. Andy K - which bike shops do you go to in Cheshire/MCR?

You could use any make of cd auto changer with any head unit providing the changer comes with a fm modulator allowing you to use it with your desired head unit (also depends if you're head unit has cd player controls i presume).
I dont know what the results of this are like though as i tend to put a 6 disc changer either in glove box/boot or under the passenger seat depending on space.

Buy Redline Mag it's pretty good for ICE systems and people selling 'em.
Quite a few dealers listed with all prices.
This bit's enclosed in Smiley's
Don't worry about your rep ( cos this month you get a set of dust caps free and next month free red furry dice - I have mine on order )

The Alpine 604 should cost around £230 or so, it's about the smallest unit & fits your budget. If you use an Alpine head unit & connecting cable, the changer will remember & display your CD titles too.

Choice of multichanger is pretty mmuch down to taste. I have a Kenwood.
Be wary though of using an FM demodulater. This is a way of using a changer with a "normal" head unit by connecting it to the aeriel socket. You also get a remote control.
Don't do this because the sound quality is terrible. I'm not sure why but I believe it has something to do with FM signals being compressed i.e they chop off the top and bottom of the signal.
You might like to try a second hand unit - you might get more for your money as to buy a good changer and head unit to go with it will be tight in your budget.

Andy,
THE BEST THING YOU'LL EVER DO IS SWAP THOSE SPEAKERS FOR SOME DECENT 6x9"ers.
Caps are deliberate!!! It took me five hours to fit them but has totally improved the driving experience (in sound dept). I've got a Kenwood changer too.
Good luck (trust me on the speakers).

I did have a horrid feeling that using fm modulators was a bit nasty, and i've never resorted to using them personally so couldnt comment.
I know this WAY out the required price range, but i was down at Huets car audio today listening to the nakamichi range...........
now that is quality, serious money though.
One good thing is it usually produces the reaction of 'naka what ???' and it looks very blans when compared to kenwood masks and the latest pioneer head units, but listen to the sound quality........... <me dribbles>.
The guy demoing the units today played the mid range £600 nak with 6 in dash changer alongside a kenwood mask and top of the range pioneer and the nak was so much clearer & sharper. Then the bugger turned on the £1000 nak.................
NO CONTEST.
Gotta have one.
