My WRX does 85 mph at 4000 rpm in 5th. At 3000 rpm the speed is a shade over 60 mph. I thought all the Japanese spec cars had a shorter ratio box than the UK cars.

Odd question I know, but I'm curious.

Is the gearing of an imported WRX Wagon the same as a UK Spec wagon?

Just wondering if the WRX is different due to the 112mph limiter, which may mean the gearing is shorter, or am I being a complete idiot?

I think it's the same on the WRX, but shorter on the STi's, Type R and RA.

The limiter can easily be bypassed with a gearbox mechanism.

Gethin:
Thanks. I know about the limiter bypass, just wondered that as this was in place maybe they had changed the gearing as well.

My concern is that when/if I get my WRX Wagon I don't want to have the engine screaming it's head off in fifth when I'm crusing at.... um, 70 mph on the motorway.

The above was mentioned by an offical UK scooby dealer as a point for not going for the imports. But I would have though if it was the case that most people on the BBS would have mentioned it in the past.

My WRX cruises at around 3000 rpm on the motorway at 70 MPH and at around 3400 rpm at 80 MPH. Was quite boomy with Magnex back box but now with the downpipe and centre cat removal it's as quiet as a mouse on the motorway!

Don't listen to UK Scooby dealers when it comes to advise on imports. They're looking after their own interests. Of course there are exceptions to this when the person in question is a true scooby enthusiast...

Thanks. My mind is now as rest.

Did think it was scooby dealer 'talk', but just wanted to make sure. This is a) for my peace of mind (which I now have), and b) so I can go to the dealer and tell him what BS he is spouting and offer to take him out on the local bypass and prove the sweet gearing of an import

Only the 2-doors.

Oh, and the RA.

According to the SIDC Faq the UK cars do 24.88 mph per 1000 rpm in 5th.
The regular WRX/STi models have slightly lower gearing. They quote for the STi IV
21.8 mph per 1000 rpm, which is exactly what my MY96 WRX does.
The Type R and RA models have lower gearing again with about 19 mph per 1000 rpm in 5th.
It seems to me that there are at least 3 different sets of ratios on Impreza's.

Also note that 5-door WRX's have lower gearing as well.
Well early models do, not sure about the latest ones
(and not sure about the 5-door STi either)

My MY94 5-door WRX does approx 21MPH(indicated) per 1000 rpm in 5th
but since the speedo overreads by 9%, its actually less than that.
