PPP HELP PLEASE

Hi all
Can someone please help me with the following
I want to know if the whole box(ecu)of your car gets replaced when you install the PPP or do they open the existing one and solder a new "chip" in and then close it again? The reason why i ask is that i believe my car is not producing the power that it should and that the people here in South Africa have tampered whith the original PPP Chip.My car is a WRX 01 and makes 224lb/ft an 233bhp on 97ul fuel at sea level, how does this compare with your figures in th UK.
