Was going onto a roundabout planning to go straight ahead, put my foot down in second gear, car sped up and started to understeer, so i backed off the accelerator a little bit and the back end slid out a bit to the left (steering to the right), fishtailed and then pulled it self back into line once i straightened the steering wheel, put my foot down again on the exit and it did the same but back end slid out to the right (steering to the left) and then fishtailed and pulled into line when front wheels straighted up (this time i didnt back off the accelarator), speed wasnt too high, was about 8pm today, was cold but i dont think there was ground frost.

Do you think this happened as their was too much power/ torque going through the rear wheel rather than me going to fast.????? ideas please.

no doubt you will hear all about slip angles, tyre pressure and advanced driving courses soon enough so excuse me for being all boring but i would say, in my non-expert capacity, that when your car slides all over the road that yes, you may be going to fast.

60:40 to the front. u got different tyres on the rear to the front ? still runnin the bridgestone potenza re-10's ? if so, they're lethal and prone to that - get shot...

yeah got the standard bridgestone potenzas all round running onm standard 16s, wanna get toyo proxys, but still got loads of tread left on these.

Am i also right in saying that if the back does slid out a little, just keep your foot on the gas and the front wheels will pull it out if trouble.

Thumbs up

Get your geometry checked and get rid of those Bridgestones sooner rather than later (tread or no tread).....Seeing as you are on standard 16's you might want to set your tyre pressures to around 34psi front and 30psi rear and see if that helps in the meantime.

Roundabouts in impreza = slow (slowish ) in, fast out

Geometry.

Mine did this, I thought it was supposed to do it... Then I had the geometry set to what it should be.

Back end is planted utterly, unless I provoke it.

If the back end slipped out to the right surely you would steer to the right not the left as stated or you would be doing a donut?????????????????

i meant i was steering to the left when it slid out to the right, but i jus straightened the wheels and it went back into line.

Can the back wheels on an AWD spin faster than the front wheels.

IMHO, no, but it's not about rotation speed: it's about grip. If you have less grip at the back (for example, when the back end is unweighted due to braking, or whatever) then there's less grip...

I'm not technical on these sort of things at all, you can tell can't you?

Mine did it the other night, but I was going downhill, on the brakes, released the brakes, turn in on the gas and out she slid, nice and progressively. Oh, and I was going too fast, it was fun

You have had the best advice,so I'll underline it.

Get the geometry done properly by someone who knows about anti bump steer etc and fit decent tyres such as Toyo's or Goodyear F1's. and then you can really enjoy your motoring.

well got a service due soon, so will ask the dealer to check the geometry, and i wanna get 17s anyway soon with the toyo proxys. Hopefully that will sort it all out.

And there i was thinking only RWD cars were tail happy.

your dealer is probably not the best place to get the geomoetry sorted. Powerstation or TSL seem to be the best. I can vouch for Powerstation.

Powerstation are in Cheltenham so not too far away (I am from Bucks/Berks. Took me just over an hour to get there.)
Worth having a chat with them - 01242 238400 or enquiries@powerstation.org.uk
