On the way to work I span my scooby on a roundabout. I hit it at about 55 mph felt the front wheels loose grip and then played the opposite lock game. Luck I did not hit anything. I reckon black Ice. I've had the car nearly 3 months and was driving round thinking I had limitless grip. Not the case.
Got a way with it this time.
Oh yeah its a
MY98 Impreza 5 door standard. On front I have new TOYO Proxy T1-S On the back the tyres are still from when I bought the car one viking, one woosung??
I need to get rid of those two. I'll put TOYO on the back as well.
Why do people mix tyres??
I've read that if you mix tyres scooby's have been know to swap ends. Any comments?

yip ive done that a couple of times, it becomes second nature after a while then you become cocky and try and slide it on purpose but contol it if you can, silly really so dont do it, will only cost you money in the long run

A pair of Toyo Proxes T1-S shouldn't cost you more than £200 fitted, so just do it. It might not have made the difference this time, but if you have sticky tyres up front and wooden ones on the back, you have a recipe for oversteer.

bridgestone re-10's on the back ? similar experience a few weeks back runnin p7000's on the front. binned them the next day even though the tread was v good - they're a deathtrap, especially when mixed...

Make sure your tyres are properly scrubbed in as well before booting it.
I lost mine and mashed it up doing the speed limit round a tightish bend in the wet before the Toyos had bedded in properly. Result was like driving on ball bearings

I agree Hanslow. Had the tyres on last week. Can still see the red and yellow marks. Guess I need to bed the tyres in. I'll put TOYOs on the back as well to try and eliminate the problem. Went back to the roundabout to see what was on the surface and could see aload of sand!!

Probably be a good idea to have the same rubber all round and good quality rubber at that. If you were going into any roundabout at 55mph it stands to reason you were ******* around in which case there is a huge risk element above normal a-b driving! What's even more risky is reporting such an incident on here 
Oh and it probably swapped ends because of lift-off oversteer. Ironically a little more power might have prevented it. If you've not had the bumpsteer and geometry done I'd suggest you get that done, makes a big difference although when the car lets go it does so more dramatically than the standard car

Where I went off was a nice shiny drain cover about where the back end broke loose Hadn't rained for ages, then downpoured. With new tyres was a complete disaster.
I would only class myself as an average driver and unfortunately cocked it up controlling it. Fortunately both myself and girlfriend were OK as we only impacted at about 20 mph (no air bags set off and seatbelts didn't lock). Pride hurt, but it made me read up a bit on what I should have done. Scared the crap out of me for a while though when cornering in the wet.

TurboKitty - never put wider tyres on the fron - rear tyres snake in their path. trust me. been there, done that (on a previous car).
really wierd and frightening effect - cant drive in a straight line above 30mph...
wider tyres on the back is driveable but never tried it on a 4wd, prolly not recommended for handling...

Mall, Having a spin within 3 months of scoob ownership sounds about right. I think that most of us have done it, or atleast had a moment.
Problem may have been partially to do with the tyres, but the main prob was as you said yourself, you thought that you had limitless grip.
The thing with scoobs is that they inspire confidence and make you feel like you're the bollox of a driver, and then theres all of the hype you read about 'em before you buy one, that they grip like **** to a blanket. So you get in your first scoob and think that you're invincible!! Big mistake!
I'm sure you've learnt from this (i bet you **** yer pants, coz i did when i first spun it). You've got to show the car a bit of respect.

Riftzone, I'm not asking because I do it, I'm asking because someone else on here recently said they had 205/45 front and 215/40 rear and thought it was fine. I thought it sounded like a recipe for disaster. Personally I wouldn't mix different brands of tyres on a 4WD, not even split front/rear, but I certainly wouldn't mix different profiles.
Just wondering if anyone else feels the same way.

I must be a cr@p driver then cos I havent spun in nearly 4 years of ownership!!! (Note to self - edit this bit before you end up tempting fate and looking really daft).
All this talk of tyres is getting away from what really happened - icy morning, roundabout and 55mph is not a good combination! Certainly not having a dig but I think that if you put the best tyres in the world on and then hit the same roundabout in the same conditions (ie ice) you will spin again. Glad to hear you got away with it.

A lot RWD drive cars have wider tyres on the back to try and induce understeer ie. the front doesnt have as much grip as the back. The elise is a good example of this.
As for mixing tyres then thats a recipe for disaster IMHO. Plus I was always told on a scoob to replace all four tyres in one go as uneven levels of grip and tread depths can over time damage the diffs.

Ditto etc etc but it does sound like a trully hideous combination of tyres, great grippy new beasts on the front & a mixture of 2 different shyte brands on the rear Heinsight is luvly but sounds like an accident waiting to happen & im glad it wasnt a serious prang etc
I span on sum poop rubber in wet when applying right foor on original 15"ers & did a bit of lift off oversteer when back end started going which inevitably didnt help but the carp rubber wasnt up to high quality car & next day 17"ers & toyos were ordered Now for sale here quick plug & they are superb in the wet i will never put cheap rubber on again! U can get toyos for 17"s for less than £80 from likes of mytyres so really no excuse now is there

infact there are just £70.4 per toyo (VAT & del included by looks of it) there at minute which means safety for £140.8 bargain IMO especially round corners
