Is it possible to reset the ECU on an 02 car without the diagnostics tools? I heard somewhere that turning the ignition on (without starting) 5 times in succession does a soft reset?
Any ideas?

You can read and re-set the ecu using the connects under the steering column on older Impreza's, not sure about the MY02.
Have a look at this site Subman2001nz and do a search on resettinf ecu.
Cheers.
Ian.

Because of the APS TMIC I fitted...I'm interested to see if it makes a difference, as presumably the ECU will only adapt to the AVERAGE.
The TMIC should give me a pressure drop and so more low down boost. Just an experiment really. I think the standard ECU limits boost anyway so may not make a jot of difference!!!

Dave I have never reset the ecu on mine, may have been done on a service though but couldnt tell.
On my 98 UK I could tell when the dealer has reset it becuase it had to relearn the SUL I used and felt sluggish for a few miles or so and the really went well.
The older the car the more beneficial the reset as it speeds up the learning cycle if you have changed fuels for example. I always ran 97/98 fuel in my UK so when it was reset the performance went down, I guess because it went back to defaults but very soon normal service was resumed.
I thought the 5 times off an on was somebodys solution to a CEL for a decat sensor problem. If you have a CEL come on then get it into a dealer PDQ.

Edcase,
It is true about start, idle then switch off repeated 5 times to reset the ECU.
I did it on my MY02 when the CEL came on one day (I knew why ) and it cleared the fault via a reset.
