residual values are going only one way I'm afraid and that's down.
I can't see any scoobs retaining value due to a combination of the fact that all the people who bought the "trendy" vehicle of the moment have moved onto diesels, minis etc. They are now boosting the prices of those vehicles artificially and until the next bandwagon rolls along that's the way they'll stay. Also the fact that IM's list prices in the UK have fallen dramatically(due to the extreme dislike of bug eye models with the general public) which can only have the effect of trickling down to older models.
The scoob's day as a car of the fashionista's is over- thank god, it's just down to us real car enthusiasts now!

Two months ago i was in the same predicament as you guys,i.e:a 57000 mile uk my'00 4 door, ppp'd,pd7's,prodrive big brake conversion etc...in fact it was to full wr sport spec & then some more!I had it from new.It was serviced, fettled & maintained by the supplying dealership via a lex full maintenance agreement,so they made a lot of money from my loyalty to them. When it came to px-ing it for a sti8,their offer & total indifference was nothing short of an insult! The trouble was it seemed to be the same story with several others too. That was until i was encouraged by Mike Wood of Prodrive to get in touch with John Mathers of Cross Roads Subaru in Tredington, Warwickshire. What a difference!John took an immediate interest in my car, took it for a quick spin & concluded "that it was a fast car...but it could be faster!!!"He then offered me £3000 more than any one else & promised me delivery of my silver ppp'd sti8 on March 1st.The car is truly amazing & the moral of this drawn out tale is to give John a call on 01608 661544,he might just be able to help you out.

I can second that about Jon at Tredington, top bloke and gave me great part ex on my gold Legacy which they've been stuck with for 5 months now!
BTW, they are doing some great performance mods which I'm going to be saving up for, the twin exhaust that sounds like nothing else combined with their other tweaks beat anything I've ever driven. Superb and enthusiastic people down there.... I've now had 3 cars from them!
:-)

phoned up a local dealership the other day out of curiosity and asked what theyd give me for mine (my00 Uk turbo 15K miles) totally standered, and he offered me £12k against an STi 7, after gentle persuaision he offered me £14K, against an Sti7 15K miles, doesnt seem to bad compared to some of the figures for other owners, maybe due to the low mileage??

What's wrong with keeping a perfectly good car for a few years longer ? In these lousy job/economic/policitial/social conditions, there's no harm in swallowing a little pride, and putting off buying that new motor. If it was a crap car, you wouldn't be buying another; if something major went on the car, it'd still be cheaper to fix it (in fact, an ideal time to upgrade ) rather than shell out loads on a new one.
Is vanity worth more than heavy depreciation ?
The dealers are counting on you that it is...

deerhunter i agree, i think some people are definitely having the pi55 taken and to be honest from the people i've spoken to i think the worst dealers are down this way (ie. south) !
markd, sorry to hear about the 8k, really pi55es me off that they can drop the price 3k and not compensate anyone, mind you i think i lost about 18k over the 3yrs i had the car, so not a lot better

The scoob is just a fast mainstream car who's residuals were held high by demand.
With the colapse of the IT mega earnings market and the introduction of the bugeye the high demand and waiting list have gone.
To be able to retain over 40% value £8000 after 3 years is still good compared to other £20k cars on sale and loads better than some. ST24 or Alfa etc.
I think the scoob is just finding its natural place in the market and we have to accept that no one "Should" be willing to pay £15k for a 3 year old MY00 when a new import is only £16k and a new UK car is only 20K at full list and more like £19k after haggling/trade in allowance.

A workmate has just bought a 2001 registered MY00 with only 15000 miles, one private owner from a main dealer for £13k
Last owner got £10500 for it against a new 1.6 Wagon.

Yep, dealer margins seem to be typically £2k on cars of this value. Money for old rope IMO ... but I still buy from dealers myself. Have noticed that if you're trading in for a new scooby the offer should be better. Heard about a guy who was offered £8k for his MY00 against an MR2 but £12k(!) against a new WRX. The £8k offered for my MY99 was through a Honda dealer (temporarily strayed towards a Civic Type R!!). Really don't think he wanted my business.

Just struggled to sell a STI3, some people also said Import prices are down & this is also having a negative effect. The general looks of the 7 & 8 + less rally success must also be having an effect. I just hope they do something radical with the 9 & also give us the better engines, A good flagship car is the only way I can see Subaru pulling the market back up.
In the meantime I think the slowing down of the economy & potentially rising fuel costs can only do more harm

One factor could be the whole supply and demand scenario. IIRC 1999/2000 was the best in terms of sales of Impreza Turbos in the UK. The number of cars available compared to the number of potential buyers has changed dramatically compared to the earlier years of the Impreza.

as above - mainly down to supply and demand. When I bought my first Impreza in '99 I was looking at an 8 month waiting list. I ended up buying a 2 month old car with 2000 miles on it for £1500 more than list price. I don't regret it one little bit as I enjoyed every moment of owning it. Then last year I px-ed the car against my current RB5. I effectively lost about £12k on the car in 3 years, but the RB5 had depreciated by almost the same amount. So I ended up with a better car, in much better condition, with another 12 month warranty. All in all I am very happy (although I doubt the dealer is as 9 months later he still has my old car on his forecourt!)
There are now so many Imprezas around that prices cannot possibly be maintained - Jap imports, Euro imports and especially the scrapping of import quotas.
Combined with this is the fact that there are so many fantastic £20k cars to choose from these days, which was not the case a few years ago.
Sad but true.

Went to my dealer on Saturday to look at changing my 1 year old bugeye for a new shape. Was told that my car is now only worth £14.5k - That means I have lost £7k in one year against list price
Had to walk away at that point to go cry in the corner Looks like I'm keeping the bugeye for the next two years, until my pcp runs out. Will still owe over £9K at that point, the car might be worth scrap in two years at this rate!
Don't get me wrong, I love my scoob but I'm not sure I can afford to loose this much money again - might be my first and last one

As someone has already pointed out, its a buyers market. I bought a mint sti7 prodrive for £19500. Someone has taken a whacking great hit on that deal!!!

One other thing, dealers are less interested in selling cars with 60k or over as they can't get official extended warranties (I think) - could explain poor part ex on 55k+ cars.

Im suffering at one end and doing OK at the other - Ive sold my MY96 saloon (~270bhp ) with 56k miles for 6200, and agreed purchase of an Oct 01 standard UK car with warranty until Oct 2004 and 12k miles for what I consider a good price - so good I didnt haggle, Im happy Im getting a good deal.
I plan to keep it for 4-5 years anyway, so by then it will be worth maybe 50% of what Im paying now - so it sould appear I'll "win" again relatively speaking.

remember though that if the price of a new sti was still £28K and a standard wrx £23K then all our cars would be worth 3K more! , I pesonally expect my STI PPP to be worth 15-17K in 3 Years meaning a loss of £3-4K per year.
Any bug-eye owners have lost out big time - 1 year old and already out of date due to revised car. Classic Shape now 2 generations old - but still holding price reasonably well.
examples:
STI 7 PPP dealer price £22K (5K drop from new last year) - awful
MY00 W Reg classic £12495 (10K drop in 3 years) - not bad
You cant buy a NEW car and keep it for a year and then moan when its lost loads, if u keep the sti7 ppp for another 2 years i bet i wont keep loosing £5K a year!
If u only want it for 12 mts - rent one!
