In the wilderness - glad to be back
#1
After a year with an EVO VII FQ300 that was plain ordinary am pleased to back with Subaru again.
Next week sees a silver STi 8 with PPP.
Since the departure of my P1, car life was never quite the same.
Hello everyone again. It's really great here.

Hello Simon. Interesting post - I would have thought that the Evo VII would be a great car to drive, and the FQ300 even better.
I saw an Evo yesterday in a supermarket car park - a special Tommy Mak Limitied Edition and thought how much I'd like to own one. As they don't import Evo's into France I doubt I'll have one any time soon so I'll stick with my scoob and trade up when the 2.5 litre version eventually arrives here.
I'd be interested in hearing why you felt the Evo was so very ordinary, maybe then I can take what I read in Evo magazine with a large pinch of the salty stuff.

I looked at an EVO7, not keen on the styling (down to personal preference though), didnt like the interior at all and the engine noise wasnt as good a the boxer noise. They go well enough and a standard is nearly as quick as my RA .

I've always liked the look of the Evo VI and thought the VII wasn't bad. Not too keen on the VIII but I guess I wouldn't turn one down if I was offered it for free
I was very disappointed they didn't have an VIII at the Geneva show as I was looking forward to sitting in it and arranging for a test drive...with no intention of purchasing as it would cost a small fortune to import it.

Wackey et al,
OK, I found the car ordinary; thousands probably don't.
1). Didn't like the drone of the engine. Just me found it very tiring.
2). Didn't have 'character'.
3). Did the job but annihilated the traffic in a detached sort of way. P1 did as well but was a hoot also.
3). After getting out after driving I felt no immediate compulsion to get back in & have another go.
4). Unnecessarily hard ride.
5). To ram the point home some more; even having a stage 1 engine conversion fitted by Extreme auto's (325 bhp) didn't improve things.
6). My fault for never taking onto a track where it probably excels.
Good points were:-
It looked good.
Was big inside & good boot.
Went round corners well.
Anyway,
After hearing those boxer engine throbs at a SW meet I felt car Subaru car homesick again. The STI8 PPP test drive convinced me to come back again. In the short test run in the Sti it felt furiously quick but had the character back.

I'd say 1 step backwards, 2 forward.
