Likely to have been 220bhp when standard - see here, Section 2.1.1 and check your Model Code in the table to be sure.

Even if its a Sport Wagon? I really hope it is 280 bhp, I haven't been impressed by a car for a long time.

Japanese model listing here http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm#2.1 section 2.1.1 lists all the classivs. All power figures are in PS which is just slightly more than bhp eg 276bhp=280PS

Ok I'm guessing its gonna be 220 bhp

Whats the cheapest way of making it 280+?

I'm slightly upset now to be honest!

If it's got a big exhaust on it then it may have a couple of more modifications...chip,filter,de-catted etc....

Might be a bit more power there than 220 bhp.

Its got the standard filter on it, I did check that, it also has a turbo timer on it so maybe you are right that it has more to it, keep your fingers crossed for me lads.

Will this car impress me more than my Celica GT4(Jap import) and will it impress me more than the 220 bhp Audi Coupe?

I was going to get a GTO but decided on this one because we have dogs. Its a cow that I can't drive it until its registered in this country.

Cheers for your help so far.

If it was me I would be much happier if it was closer to standard than a "chipped" up version. At least you know where you are starting from.

Bear in mind, although the estates are quoted as having slighlty less power than the saloon models, certainley the earlier ones seem to showing more power than quoted. Mine, a STI V1 Estate, was only supposed to have 240BHP, and yet managed 289BHP on a rolling road, with no mods at all, apart from decent fuel.

Certainley the early STI models seem to be able of much more than originally quoted for them - and I seem to recall the "Sport Wagon" was the official Subaru name for the STI wagon's.

According to the specs, a 5 door STI 4 & 5 has 300 ps, about 290 BHP, so if its a wagon wanted, this seems to be the one to have, thats why I have one!!

Would it say STI somewhere on the car if it was an STi from Japan though? I just remember a nasty big WRX sticker on the back and it didn't have any red on the engine.

The STI 1's didn't have the red inlet manifold, but they did have the pink strut braces and pink STI badges on them. At the end of the day, if your happy with the car, then go for it. If you set on a true 280BHP, your options are to go for a later model (more money), or find an early STI car (difficult, as numbers were restricted).

It's relatively easy to upgrade an early car to 280BHP though - just spend your money wisely. A full decat exhaust can release 20BHP on it's own.
