If there is alot of smoke, then the turbo aint very good 
It depends on what your problem is to start with, you should get a hefty push in the back feeling with a tdo5 turbo, running your car on the wrong fuel or the likes can cause damage, mainly to the engine rather than the turbo.... (you should be running 97+ octane booster, ei super unleaded).
