I've had my UK97 turbo for about 18 months now and after a few choice mods I'm finally getting it to just about where I want it. Gone through the obligatory stages of wanting something different (mainly model rather than manufacturer) and looked at a P1 or the new STi8.
Anyway, went to one of these local cruises to kill a bit of curiosity and saw no less than 10 Subarus all with "kids" in them (I use the term loosely as I'm only 26) thrashing them to show off their dump valves and induction kits etc. Made me really question wanting another given that they seem to be so accessible to the boy racers. I know that the exclusivity has gone but still......
I'm now thinking of an Evo 6-there were none of these on view and certainly none getting thrashed. Seem to carry a bit more respect!! No offence to the boy racers who go to these things or to the lads with the Subarus-good luck to you.
Incidenatlly some nice cars, Supras etc even a Honda NSX and Porsche GT3.

So you wouldnt get a another Scooby based on the fact that some Boyracers have them??...seems abit sad to me!!! Scoobs are accesible to younger drivers now because there are some older cheaper ones around now and the money they save buying the car they spend on Insurance!
How many Boyracers do you see in a P1 or an STI8???!!

Yep fair point Dunc20. Love a P1 but its starting to look a bit dated when you put it next to the newer models. STI8 just doesn't seem to have the ooomph that I would have expected (test drove one last week).
I guess you had to be there to fully appreciate the point I'm making. Sad?? Cheers mate.
Despite this I know I'm contradicting myself and I'll end up with a P1.

No offence meant directly at you by saying 'sad', just meant it because you shouldnt let things like that influence a purchase of a new car.
Dunc.
ps. get a bloody P1, they are an all time classic car! Best looking Scoob made to date!

All models depreciate cost wise and EVOs will as well. Sure you maybe okay for 12-18 months but check out autotrader you can get an EVO4 for 10K now. The difference with EVOs is that there are less about especially the early ones and the cost to insure is a lot higher compared to a UK spec scoob.
If you want an exclusive motor then you need to buy soemthing new to the market eg Nissan 350Z or a very expensive second hand motor like a 911 or a Ferrari.
Either way to buy a car that the "boy racers" dont want it either has to be either
1) Way out of the price range
2) Small numbers
3) Not trendy

When I first got my scoob (MY97) 5 years ago they were the 'best kept secret' fantastic performance for the money etc. Driving to/from work I maybe passed one or two in a week and we exchanged a flash of the lights and a wave etc. Felt good to be in with a cult car group.
Unfortunatelly their image has been tarnished. They are now within the reach of the boy racers and I can pass upto 5 every day on the way to work, sadly they are so common now.
I have since moved on (to the dark side) and hope the same doesn't happen to them!

Ive got an EVO 5 GSR, had her for three years now and nothing has gone wrong (touch wood). Compared to a standard UK turbo they are in a different leaque, probably on par with an STI V etc. Best advice is take one for a drive and make your own mind up.
Come over to the MLR, you will be surprised with the number of members who are ex scooby drivers. They cant all be wrong
I still love the scoob, you never forget the first time you heard that flat four boxer sound the first time you give it some welly. I was actually planning on moving up the scooby ladder and getting myself a STI IV or V but there were too many horror stories at the time with engines going pop etc. I have no regreds going over to the over side.

im 24, and i do the local cruises
round this way u dont see anybody younger then 20 imo driving ne as they havnet caught on
not sure what its like down south
but
i bought mine as i got a pay rise, i knew i could afford it and always wanted one, i always thought the evo was a better car, but there 2 pricey imo
i have a few mates with scoobys, all localish cruise peeps, although ive never seen any of them doing daft dougnuts and slideing round car parks in them
they respect them to much
i do think that the early models are far to cheap now!! 2 more years and the tramp round the corner from mc donalds in north sheilds will be driving one, but theres a diffrence imo between a well looked after one and a tacky, max power type, tarted up old knacker with NOS,FLAMER KITS, and daft neon washer jets

Don't seem to get that at the Derby/Notts meet.
Chirak - whats wrong with an Sti8 in Blue ? - No I won't start a colour argument, not going to bite.

If you go for an EVO theres only one really EVO 6.5 IMHO.
Just drive an STi5/6 Type R or RA though, just for reference purposes of course . To me the interior was better on the scoob and the engine sound just wasnt there. No argument its a good alternative to a scoob but saying there are better depends on how you look at it and what car and toys you have already.
