Sold my STi 4 a few months ago, it was mint and a factory 300hp model too. Being a 98MY I was a little worried about all the stories I constantly heard about the engine / piston slap problems associated with that model year.

I am now thinking of getting another scoob (Classic shape) and wondered if anyone can offer advice about which MY's to avoid and why, or alternatively whats the best option for reliable power?

From what i read on here. Most common probs were on the MY97-98 models , those were more prone to piston slap.

I think most solid models were MY99-00 but if i recall correctly the MAF's were a bit delicate on there , or the sensors are anyway if you decided to fit an induction kit.

Are you wanting to get a JDM spec car or a UK one ? Obvious thing is though, if the car has been taken car of and shows a solid and reputable service history , and you continue to take good care of the car using the right petrol , oil etc.. , then there shouldnt be a problem.

sorry. we have all been too busy insulting each other in the other forums!
From what I understand, piston slap only really affects the MY98, not MY99 onwards. Depending on budget, I would think that the best option for reliable power is a P1 as you can get one with a bit of warranty left for peace of mind. Alternatively an RB5 WR, which I have, is only about 30 BHP down on the P1 and there are a few of these for sale on here at very attractive prices.
Really it depends whether you feel comfortable buying an already modified car, and whether you want a UK car or import.
Whichever way you go, there are some seriously cheap cars around so best of luck in your search.
