Diablo007

I don't think the RA has the Adjustable centre Diff (certainly on earlier RAs)

STI RA's don't have A/C as standard but almost everyone I've seen has it and no electric windows, mirrors or body kit. They do have the Adjustable centre Diff though.

I might be incorrect on some points as most of what i have said is based on the earlier RAs marks but I don't think it is too different for the version 6. Hope it helps

Paul

This is going to blow all the theories and folk legends out of the water .

I have a MY00 WRX Type RA Limited

As standard from the factory it has

Air con
4x Electric windows
SWRT Blue Alcantara seats
STI 4 mid level spoiler
Ally bonnet
Light Steel Boot
Full STI "pink" suspension
ABS
STI Gold Wheels
Blue console and dash
Electric Mirrors (adjustable and closable)
Metal Pedals
7,500 Redline but 8250 rev limiter
Sonic blue colour
Fog lamps
WRX exhaust back box (but STI centre with no cat and resonator)
Short ratio gearbox

What it doesnt have is

Water spray
Adjustable diff
Roof Vent
Side skirts
STI manifold cover
STI intercooler
Sound proofing (or very little)

Think thats about it.

Cheers

ChrisP

Between mine and an STi6 RA Ltd the main differences seem to be

The STI 6 RA Ltd has

STI brakes (mine had WRX brakes)
STI engine
Roof Vent
Quick Rack (not sure mine has this)
Spoiler
Water Spray
DCCD
No ABS

BTW mine didnt come with speakers, stereo or alarm system but had an immobiliser.

Thats about it from memory, hope this helps

ChrisP

Question

Sorry if this question has been brought up several times already but I just needed to check. Anyway here goes.

Sti = Better brakes, Suspension, Higher redline tuned engine, Nice body kit i.e big spoiler etc, Short ratio gears. (all this compared to a WRX)

RA= Same brakes, suspension. engine higher spec than Sti but no air con, electric mirrors sound dumping, no radio, no rear wiper, even shorter ratio gear box. As light as possible basically. Fitted with Adjustable centre Diff. NO ABS. No Sti body kit.

Sti RA= Same as above with Air con and electrics added in but still lighter than the standard sti and faster. With better body kit.

STi RA Limited= Same as above but limited to 2000, quality rear double spoiler, Blue mica only, limited edition gold wheels. Air vent. Matching blue interior.

Ok, People agreed with this ? Or have I gone wrong somewhere ? The whole point of this being which one would people choose ? I am taking this as they are all version 6 !

Anyone got any of the RA type ?

Thanx

So is there any difference between the car you have and the Type RA STi limited ?

Or are the two the same ?

Just thinking as one is RA limited and one RA STi limited ?

On the Sti 6 Jap Brochure the Limited edition Sti RA has a twin rear spoiler, is that unique to the fact that it is the STi limited version ?

I would take it then that the STi RA loses the ABS get the center diff and side skirts and roof vent ?

The STI 6 RA Limited is different again. It has the roof vent (but I think that was a removable option i.e. you didnt have to have it).

The double spoiler was part of the standard kit for the STI6 RA LTD. No RAs have side skirts as standard, both the STI6RA and STI6RA LTD has the centre diff, water spray but no ABS and obviously the STI engine.

I may of course be wrong as there were loads of versions and options esp. towards the engine of the classic production.

AFAIK the biggest difference between a LTD and non-LTD is cosmetic kit. I would always go for the LTD version as its higher spec and has more toys.

Question

Thanx but I have been to that link before and don't find it practically useful.

It does give some information on WRX RA. But I want more info on the STi RA. I'm sure there are more points to it the just better interior and water spray and Sti engine.

I'm sure you can get them with Air con, electrics etc.

Plus Chrisp's WRX RA has electric windows/air con ABS etc which according to that link it shouldn't have to save weight. As it isn’t the Sti ??

There may be differences in the same models due to factory fitted options...? i.e. Aircon.

Question

How good are the Sti RA brakes without ABS ?

I think any of the STi version with adjustable diff have better brakes to compensate for the lack of ABS ?

What you have to remember is that the RA was originally developed to be homologated for rallying. So a lot of the road kit electic packs, spoilers etc was not fitted. The Limited versions both STi and WRX were adding the kit back whilst retaining some of the nice bits.

Anyway about time I posted a picture or two .

Question

Very nice !

Yeah I want the best of both worlds though. Want a 4 door, looks good, goes like mad but still has Air Con, eltric mirrors/windows etc.

STi RA limited with extra bits seems to be the way to go !

Just need to find one now !

I have a scoobysport back box and TSL centre and its not to bad really. You can hear the exhaust when you crack the throttle open. It is louder than my old 98 UK turbo with the same backbox.

With the standard exhaust it wasnt noisy at all.

You can always buy that sound proofing carpet for the boot, dont have any experience of it though.

The only downside to the RA is the gearbox, becuase it low geared it isnt great for motorways. Mine is approx. 20mph per 1000rpm in 5th ie. 20mph is 1000rpm , 40mph is 2000rpm, 60mph is 3000rpm etc.

The noise can drone a little on motorways esp. if you are use to a quite car. I have heard some full decats though and mine sounds decidely quiet. I would also recommend you leave the downpipe alone.

You really need to drive a few both UKs and imports as they are all different. In some respects my UK was a lot better and easier to drive and definitely cheaper to insure .

Well I live in Jersey and we don't have a motor way to speak off ! Just twisty roads everywhere ! The only motorwayish road is a five mile stretch of mostly straight road ! imaginatively called "the five mile road" lol

Acceleration and good brakes is what I need.

Get an RA vLtd - I live on the isle of man and it's the same - twisty roads everywhere and nowhere you need to cruise on. You'll love it

No such thing as a WRX Type R, It only comes in Sti form. Its WRX Sti Type R or Type R limited. Type R basically means 2 door shell (plus a few other bits).

RA (Race altered) means no air con, no electrics, sound proofing etc as standard unless added as extras at the factory. But basically rally version.

RA STi is basically the RA with STi bits thrown back in Air con and depending on version better engine parts as early RAs had Sti bits removed as rally parts would normally be fitted by customer.

V5/6 STI RA/Rs tend to have all the creature comforts unlike the earlier cars, they also include the option of a passenger airbag.

The V Ltd STI RA & R in Japan was actually marketed towards the more mature driver Most, if not all were fitted with a taller 5th gear for relaxed cruising... spoils the car big time IMO. For some reason the V Ltd Type R doesn't have the quick rack like the RA version.

Chris, does your RA have the R180 diff and big rear brakes like the STI?

Cool

Here's my STiV RV Limited on this thread MY RA
Mines got air con, electric windows, folding electric mirrors, quick rack steering, front lsd, diff control, the STi type rear brake pots, incredible acceleration helped by the crazy gear ratio's

Downside is expensive to insure, needs oil change every 3.5k miles, octane boost with every tank of Optimax (not crucial but i do ) much more thirsty than my MY99 UK scoob was.

All the downside's go out the window when you drive the car though
Also nice to have an exclusive car that when you go to a meet you can more or less know you'll be the only StiV RA there

Really ? Never heard of them in any information I have read. So we talking a 2 door WRX ?

The 2 doot was used as the basis for the WRC car so I'm not sure why they would bring out a non Sti version ? Or we talking a WRX type R type RA ?

?!!!!??????????????????

AFAIK mine has the WRX diff and rear brakes. The STI with the DCCD has a different diff. And yes there are a few NON-STI WRX Type R about. A couple of guys on here had one.
